Replaced sensor life expectancy

Leaving the corrosion issue aside (which should not happen to a new sensor anyway), I don’t think the principal determinant of life expectancy is the sensor but the shutter.  There has been much discussion over the years about what constitutes a very high (i.e. close to life expectancy) M9 shutter count, as far as I remember without clear answers.

And putting aside the shutter (and the sensor), there are the electronics of the camera generally.  All are bound to fail at some point, probably before the replaced sensor does.  I remind myself to enjoy the camera with this in mind.  The value of the camera should have this worry “priced in”.  Sell it on, if not.

Appreciate the insight, thank you. I'm looking at it from the purchasing end. I have a 240 and I'm spinning wheels on pursuing an MM1 or 246. The MM1 feeling like a last chance at something old and the 246 not really exciting me too much, as I like the 240's b&w conversions and feel the actual 246 files won't be much different (just quicker to get there). I just think I'd like a dedicated mono. As I'm pretty much dedicated to b&w at this point.

I think if you are happy to live with a reasonable but finite life-expectancy (just as with any electronic device, actually), you will be very happy with an MM1.  The really relevant information is a) proof of new sensor, and b) shutter count.  To check a), do the following:

Power on

Delete -> up (2x) -> down (4x) -> left (3x) -> right (3x) -> Info

Under the menu item “Hardwarde IDs”, an MM1 with a new sensor will read:  CCD ID: 53

The shutter count can be determined by using this app:

What number of actuations is excessive has been the subject of discussion, e.g.:

The sensor is an electronic device that does not wear out as such, but may deteriorate under the influence of cosmic rays. So if you keep it at the bottom of a deep mine it will last forever, and in a stratospheric balloon over one of the poles it may be. a matter of months or even weeks. In normal use: for as long as you will use it, albeit with some remapping when needed.

Best answer to a silly question ☺️
