Would be great if you could place an arrow where the dust is. Or publish an image that shows the dust better. Maybe I am just too stupid? chasdfg Posted September 17, 2021 Share #24  Posted September 17, 2021 I wouldn't accept a lens with that large a speck of dust right out of the box. Earlier on my Leica journey I purchased a lens brand new which came with some observable dust and a pin prick paint defect. Leica told me was normal and "within spec" (and the paint issue was caused by me knocking the lens, when I had just purchased it and opened it out of the box). I accepted that explanation when I shouldn't have, and the issues still bothered me until i wore the lens in and owned it long enough for dust and user marks to feel appropriate given the age. If it were me today, I'd have returned the lens or exchanged it - you're paying too much just to have sour feeling. Purchases like these are indulgences in life and you shouldn't have to feel shortchanged in any way (and for it to happen twice...). I'd shoot the 35APO extensively over the weekend. That way you can assess whether to exchange it again or if the 35FLE is enough for you and move on if it's the latter.
Ktsa5239 Posted September 17, 2021 Author Share #25  Posted September 17, 2021 (edited) To make the matters worse, they said the Leica store manager had checked it to make sure it’s perfect. So is he hoping I won’t see it or maybe there’s more dusts particles that is just waiting to come out any moment. It’s so frustrating!! And two in a row is unimaginable Edited September 17, 2021 by Ktsa5239
wizard Posted September 17, 2021 Share #26  Posted September 17, 2021 Dust particles are terrorists and behave irresponsibly. Don't forget that any given lens has usually covered a lot of miles in various transportation devices before it reaches the customer. I am pretty sure lenses are inspected for dust at Leica before they leave the factory. However, a tiny dust particle that may have concealed itself somewhere in the lens may well move during shipping, and as a result may end up on an internal lens surface that was dust-free before. Don't get me wrong, I do not like to see dust specs on a new lens myself, but it is actually quite hard to totally avoid them. I bought a new binocular (not from Leica) last year, and the internal lens surfaces were dust-free. Just a few weeks after I had bought the lens, I noticed a dust particle similar to the one of the OP on the inner surface of the first objective lens. I thought about returning the binocular (it was still under warranty) but, since I was very pleased with its performance, decided against it. The next weekend I took that binocular with me on a motorcycle trip (stored the bino in one of the motorcycle panniers). Upon returning from that trip I noticed to my surprise and great satisfaction that the dust particle had simply disappeared (the lens surface was as pristine as when I had bought tne bino). Until today, the dust particle has not reappeared on any of the internal lens surfaces. May it rest in peace somewhere within the bino. And if it were to reappear, I am off for another motorcycle trip 😉.
jplomley Posted September 17, 2021 Share #27  Posted September 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bought a new 28 SC v2 when first launched, and there was a fingerprint under the front element. Sent it back for replacement, and I’d expect the fingerprint helped identify the culprit that did the deed.
BradS Posted September 17, 2021 Share #28 Â Posted September 17, 2021 (edited) return it, get a full refund and buy the new CV APO Lanthar and get better quality at a substantial savings. Edited September 17, 2021 by BradS
RMF Posted September 18, 2021 Share #29  Posted September 18, 2021 Sorry this has happened again to you again.. hard to even imagine this scenario and IMHO - there isn’t an excuse for this since the Leica manager personally inspected this one.  Perhaps these recurring quality control issues are the reason why there are so few of these lenses out on the market. MrFriendly Posted September 18, 2021 Share #31 Â Posted September 18, 2021 I bought a brand new 75mm APO-Summicron-M from Leica store that was clearly used with defects. @Ktsa5239 can I ask who the dealer was?

The shop send a return label and said there should be another shipment in 3 weeks. So I'll give them a more try and hopefully three times lucky. I'm in Sydney Australia, are you located here as well? No, i'm in the U.S. In May a copy of a brand new 35mm APO-Summicron-M appeared on the Leica U.S. online store, so I grabbed it. I think I got super lucky, considering how everyone is on a waiting list. The lens was very clean, absolutely mint, and without any of the dust issues you're having. I bought the 75mm APO from the same online store, so it could be a hit-or-miss. I have a habit of recording every lens or camera unboxing, just in case. I hit the record button, and thoughtfully inspect the box, and then look for any scratches or dust particles in the lens or camera. I know for a fact that some dealers use the lens, either for in-store demo or whatnot, then repackage and sell it as brand new. And other times, there is a bad batch from the manufacturer that has the same defect. I bought a 90mm Fuji lens from a local dealer once, and it had massive dust/fuzz particles inside the lens, so I returned it. I ordered the same lens from Amazon, with the same issue, so I returned it. I finally got a copy from B&H with no issues, so it took three tries. I wish lens manufacturers would use cleanrooms, seriously. caloosajo Posted September 19, 2021 Share #34  Posted September 19, 2021 If purchased from a Leica Store (ie not a Boutique or dealer), for this issue it is possible they will scan the inventory of the other Leica Stores and have it shipped pronto. That is, if another 35 APO happened to make it to the backroom. My Safari 28 Cron was one of the last 2 new stock in the US before the price increase this year and had a terrible defect in its rendering and focus calibration (think Thambar but not romantic). Replaced in ~36 hours. One caveat: the team did say that inventory between Leica Stores is becoming a bit more guarded at the direction of the higher-ups, probably a sign of the increasing popularity of Leica plus the manufacturing challenges due to COVID. Good luck, get that thing replaced or hop on the FLE bandwagon

The third one was fine but I seem to get these dark corners that doesn't disappear when stopped down all the way to f8 or f10. The guys at Sydney Leica store took a few shoots and sent the raw files to leica but I've never heard from them again. So I ended up just selling it and picking up the new 35 lux with close focusing. To be honest I feel like thats a better lens without any of the problems out of the box. Maybe I just got unlucky....
