Summicron R 180mm samples

Hi everyone,

this lens lives an incognito life, googled the name and i found very few images or reviews.

can you guys help me out? would love to see as many wide open samples of this beauty.

I owned this lens for a short while. In reality, other than fondling and admiring it, I have nothing to show for it. I share this not to put you off, but simply to say that the ergonomics, the sheer weight and front heaviness of the thing meant that I would suggest you would want to really know why you want it. Test shots on the M240 (when I had mine) revealed that it is sharp as a tack at f/2 (EVF + R>M), but cumbersome enough to warrant a tripod. I sold mine and bought the 2.8/180R instead, and it is night and day to handle - I realised that the difference for me was vanity. 

But, the 2/180 is a beautiful lump of engineering for sure. Perhaps on the SL2 it  now comes into its own? 

Just know whether you want that extra stop of difference, is all I'd say. This is not at all in the same league of extra heft as, say, a 1.4/50M > 0.95/50M, it's more like pure hand held or... not. I have no idea what they cost today, but in 2015/2016 when I bought and sold mine they were about USD 6000. 

If you do buy one I'd be curious to see some shots here - do share!

hey wine, thx for the insight, i guess it would be a mix of getting it for using it as well as investment.

i do the same with my noctilux v4, when i take it out, i pamper it.

yeah i saw this, but most images are quite small or not even made with that lens.

i  would prefer a real review.

Probably my favourite R lens - monstrous to hand hold on my DMR, but capable of stunning pictures.

interesting, the exif or tags say they are but with the APO version

Well, it is an interesting lens… I rarely bring it with me just for it’s size and weight. But the wide aperture combined with the relatively long focal length is a ton of fun and allows for some interesting effects. 
 

Without writing a full review, I would say the following: it’s incredibly sharp, even wide open. It’s a very unique and fun lens. On the SL2 it’s relatively easy to focus. But it’s a beast: very heavy and large. I wouldn’t recommend mounting it to a small camera (like a Leica M) and if you, like me, usually hike to places to take pictures it might not get as much use as it deserves
