andba Posted July 30, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 30, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've read that the hood originally used on the pre-FLE 1.4 ASPH (12589) fits on the 28mm Summicron, and is more compact. Is this true / does it actually look better and have less finder blockage? Any photographic evidence out there?

a.noctilux Posted July 30, 2021 Share #3 Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) I don't know about this myth of 12589 in place of 12451. Out of curiosity, as I don't use the original 12451 hood on my Summicron-M 28mm, trying to compare the two hoods. First thing, yes we can replace one with the other. 12589 has sophisticate lock, while the 12451 has traditional push-on two buttons, so it seems quite larger. Opening is a bit larger, a couple of millimeters on the 28mm hood. Vestigal cut-to-look-through is a bit larger 'hole' on the 28mm hood. Anyway, each hood hides a large portion in VF, of course more hiding with 28mm+hood (12589 or 12451) than 35mm. Have a look here Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted July 30, 2021 Share #5 Posted July 30, 2021 (edited) The following Leica hoods work fine on this lens: - Leica 12588, my favorite but tends to fall off too easily. - Leica 12589 (pic), same as 12588 with a locking ring. More secure but the locking ring tends to get in the way when turning the aperture ring. - Leica 12466, nice, expensive, difficult to find. Gets a bit in the way when turning the aperture ring though. Welcome, dear visitor! Are you saying that you don't necessarily need a hood at all on the 28mm Summicron ASPH? Do you ever have issues with flare?

Are you saying that you don't necessarily need a hood at all on the 28mm Summicron ASPH? Do you ever have issues with flare? You are welcome. Sometimes, flare can be part of framing 😇. It's my choice, after trying some exotic hood on the 'Cron 28mm, in the end, I use none. As side note, flaring from 'Cron can be lovely flare, just learn how to use the flare. When I need a hood, I use screw-in vented E46 as it accepts push-button cap 55mm. The Summicron-M 28mm is hardly flare prone, for example with some spots in the frame like here with Monochrom CCD ... andba Posted November 10, 2021 Author Share #9 Posted November 10, 2021 Revisiting this topic. Is the hood that is sometimes seen on the pre-FLE different than the 12589? I mean, clearly it is, but which one is this? Shown here on the AA. Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted November 10, 2021 Share #10 Posted November 10, 2021 I don't think this hood was for the Summilux 35/1.4 aspherical but i may be wrong. The latter had the 12588 hood above IIRC. This one looks like the regular hood for Summicron 28/2 v1.
andba Posted November 11, 2021 Author Share #11 Posted November 11, 2021 Ok, no I feel like a complete idiot. I have the 12589 here. I have a 35mm pre-FLE Summilux ASPH. I have been trying to get the hood on for 10 minutes, but it will not attach. I am lining up the white dots, I am lining up the red arrow to the dot, trying all sorts of things. Nothing. Anybody else have this issue, or a solve perhaps?

a.noctilux Posted November 11, 2021 Share #13 Posted November 11, 2021 Hood is 12589 with white dot and red arrows, tricky ... just turn the milled ring with the red arrow to one side to align with the white dot toward front of the hood. push the two tabs, then push on the lens. Lock by turning the ring with red arrow, that's all.
andba Posted November 11, 2021 Author Share #14 Posted November 11, 2021 @a.noctilux Yeah, I know hot it's supposed to work (I've had this lens and hood combo before) but for some reason this is not working at all.
a.noctilux Posted November 12, 2021 Share #15 Posted November 12, 2021 Can you turn the ring ? If no, something could be wrong.
andba Posted November 12, 2021 Author Share #16 Posted November 12, 2021 No the ring seems to be locked in place.
a.noctilux Posted November 12, 2021 Share #17 Posted November 12, 2021 Locked ring, so the hood can not be attached to your lens. In your place, I'd contact the seller.
andba Posted November 12, 2021 Author Share #18 Posted November 12, 2021 Exactly, yes. I mean, it's just B&H so an easy return. Was just curious to see if anybody else had this issue / solutions. Will probably just grab another one.
