Yes, this is one of the ones I'm looking at.  It's on eBay also.  I'm a bit worried about getting hit for Vat now the UK is not in the EU...

Boris (Leica from) has one too which is "As new" and Boxed for the same price as the other one.  I did buy a 28mm M-Hex from him once which was indeed "As new", so I would probably trust him.  Again the Vat.

No Vat on the Elmar-Ms as they are plentiful in the UK :)

I bought a lens from Boris in late January and didn't get hit for VAT.

You should have paid VAT to the UK customs i guess. I may be wrong though as i don't know how it works exactly since Brexit.

Correct , often through the courier with an additional service charge - but some things were slipping through untaxed.

I have bought two items from Italy this year, one this month, and no VAT.

Well, it can only be luck and sloppy import control can't it, as the HMCR rules are very clear. Items under the specified value should have UK VAT collected by the seller and then paid to the UK through an account they should open. This is why some great places, like Will van Manen, will no longer trade with UK customers.

But many EU companies are still selling to the UK thankfully and are prepared to make the necessary arrangements to register for UK VAT. There have always been a few companies, particularly in Germany, who would not sell to the UK even before Brexit. It pays to read carefully the VAT and import requirements before attempting to make a purchase. The new IOSS regulations only came into force on 1st July so I wonder if some companies have held off from making charges before that date.

That's good, I may go for that one then.  I bought my SC VM Nokton II 35mm f1.4 from a German shop as it was cheaper (should have known why!) and got charged import Vat, which made it £20 more than the UK cost.  Oh well, I was procrastinating about buying one and the apparently cheap price made me pull the trigger, which I'm glad about as I like it!

Lately when buying from eBay I've been charged vat at checkout, a few vintage audio things from the US and a vintage Nikon F lens from a Japanese seller.

It does make for a quicker service though.  The Nikkor (S Auto 35mm f/2,8) I bought was delivered by DHL within three days, much quicker than the old EMS sellers used to use.

Come to think of it I bought my Elmarit ASPH and 28mm Summaron from Kamera Express in NL (via photospecialist.co.uk) and didn't pay any charges.  The price was very slightly better than the UK but the main thing was that they had the lenses in stock no one in the UK could tell me when they would get any.

When you say 'payable at source' what do you mean? Does Ebay collect VAT now on behalf of HMRC? Didn't know about this.

Yes, it does.  In my experience from Japan/Asia and the USA.  But not EU countries.  It does save the fee for collecting it that the couriers charge, and it's consistent.  Often Parcelforce VAT and duty bore no resemblance to the actual rates and then another £13-15 to collect it.

Seen this  Hexanon 2.4/50, Vienna, Austria

is it the one you talked about, Tessar ?

I don't have experience, but interesting lens.

MFD is 80cm, strange for LTM lens (most has 1m)

Oh no Peter from Coeln Cameras just messaged me to say it had sold !

Boris has one for sale, a little more expensive but seems in mint condition.

Thanks. Yes, I've asked him a few questions and making my decision.  I've decided against the Elmar-M as it's not the look I'm looking for.  I had a four hour drive today and mulled over what look I really want i.e. what pics of mine I like and then looking at pics from from various other sources and the L-Hexanon looks the most hopeful.  I kind of want to try the olor Skopar again too so will probably end up getting one later in the year.

After much deliberation and searching pics on Flickr, I didn't think there was too much in it between the Skopar and the Hexanon.  So, I happened to stumble upon an unused, boxed Color Skopar 50mm (and in black!), that I hadn't seen before, so I snapped it up.  Another good thing about the Skopar is it's not a collapsable lens, but still very compact.

If it doesn't work out I can get the Hexanon in a few months, and sell the skopar on...

Thanks to you all for your input!
