Hi guys,

This may be a silly question, but I'm really curious. What's the purpose of this notch on the shutter speed dial?

Seen here ...

The next question would be why truncated '4' 😉

while the meterless M4 has complete '4' !

Next question: what is the small black plastic dot right next to the shutter speed dial on the modern film cameras?

Very simple, it hides the hole access to adjust the shutter without opening the camera.

Two users possible, when in production and when in "CLAed" or if the user wants to diy finetuning shutter ...

What an atrocious combination of finishes.  I feel sorry for whoever owns that.

J/K, that's awesome1

some people love the Hammertone finish (i'm definitely not partial to it too) - as a positive it hides scratches & dents

I've never notice this, shiny chrome around shutter button .

Had a look at the M4 BP, it is there even it never bothered me in so many years of using it.

On black M-A Leica had good taste to return to black ring as on black chrome M4 😄

or on M4-P

I'm intrigued by the 'reworked' MR-4. Does that mean they got an old one out of the back of a drawer and had it sprayed with hammertone?

I imagine something like that. Probably 25 new-old-stock meters were found somewhere and given the hammertone treatment. If Leica had had these made completely from scratch you would think they would have ordered a much larger run of non-hammertone meters and sold them as expensive accessories to gullible M-A owners like me.

I would say he was referring to contemporary Leicas, particularly film

The M-A is the first M camera without a built in meter since production of the M4-P ended in the early 1980's. In keeping with a tradition that started with the M3, the notch in the shutter speed dial is there to accommodate the pin on the MR meter which links the speed dial on the meter with the speed dial on the camera. When setting exposure turning the shutter speed dial on the meter it will also turn the shutter speed dial on the camera. The notch wasn't needed for cameras with built in meters. The M-A was designed to appeal to users who may like the idea of using a M2/3/4 but wanted a new camera. There are a lot of MR meters out there and technicians can adjust them for modern batteries, opening the opportunity for a whole new generation of scratched top plates.

The notch is there to couple the shutter speed with the Leicameter. You can see a very recent post I made on another thread, where I shared a short how-to video that I prepared for my customers.

Kind regards,
