@Stevendid you end up getting the 28 Elmarit? Any thoughts on it? It's my most used lens these days (light, small without hood, and fun to use). I'd really like to hear what you think of the Elmarit compared to your Lux (contrast, colors, etc). I think the 28 Lux is going to be my next lens as I'm really enjoying 28 more than 35 these days.

Hello,

I am still in the return process of the Summaron. As soon as my dealer received the package, he will send the Elmarit my way.

Keep you posted.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello,

I have owned and used extensively the 28 Elmarit for the past 10 days.
After trying first the Summaron, then the Summicron, the Elmarit was the lens I was looking for when I started this thread.

I love it on film, I love it on digital, I love it adapted on an SL.
It’s extremely different from the summilux, extremely versatile, and extremely compact.

Unlike the summaron, it’s perfectly useable at night, too.

it’s rendering is very modern, which I enjoy very much on film.
on digital, it’s very different from the Lux. It’s not as cinematic. It’s much more modern. What characterizes it for me is the 3D pop effect wide open when a subject is within 3M of the lens. Wow.
It’s the 28 from the M lineup that reminds me the most of the rendering of the Q2, which I love and miss.
This rendering is what I call the Hyper Realistic 3D pop, which you can find on the Q2, and on the SL APO lineup.

I couldn’t be happier with it. As always, it took me to try them all in order to find the one for me. I suppose I am lucky to have tried the good one last, and not first !

thanks to everyone for your contribution.

Steven,

I'm happy that you had tried them out AND now you can say which one (s?) would be your choice (s) .

As usual, any choice(s) are not forever.

We can change over time and practice, but we can choose easier after 'learning to know' them (not waste of time/money, in my view).

Summilux + Elmarit 👌🏻

For now ……

It has to be.... for now. If the lens you show is the one that would have worked as the compact alternative to my Lux, the Leica 28 Cron would have worked even better... for now.

This F2 is not as compact as the elmarit APSH.

Quite "Dylan-esque".............Impressive.

You are right of course, jealousy is an ugly emotion, also expressing such on-line can be misconstrued, but this is where we seem to live these days and there's good and bad outcomes to the ease in which we can reach out and say whatever we say. Better face to face, but that's a rarity now and more's the pity. We live more behind the walls we've created to avoid rather than encourage personal contact. I have been as guilty as anyone else in saying things on-line when if said in person would have been construed differently, now I slow the pen and keep those opinions zipped. The art of loving insults has been crushed under stifling waves of PC and that saddens the near 80 year old Londoner in me where it used to be an art-form, but too long ago now.

I think I must have misunderstood right from the start. I thought you were after a “classic/vintage” rendering,

I have a preference for vintage looks in general, but I do love the SL35 APO, and the Q2. The rendering of the Elmarit is very similar, IMO, and I found my happiness with it. Life is full a surprises. I also 50mm again now, after a 15 years break!

Thanks for letting us know what you think of the Elmarit 28. Have you seen significant rendering differences between the Elmarit 28 and Lux 28 at F4 - F8? Or is it mostly different at 1.4 - 2.8? I'm thinking about replacing my 35 FLE with a 28 Lux since I've been enjoying 28 so much more these days.

The 28 Lux is a far more spectacular lens than the fle.
I shoot most my lenses wide open most of the time so I’m not the right person to tell you how they compare at f5.6. If I had to guess, I would say that the differences thin out completely as you close down the lens.

Some shots with my Elmarit. My favourite thing about it is that it's my cheapest, most easily replaceable lens. So I took it for a swim with my wife at the beach.
