Best place to buy a used M10?

Recommended Posts

I'm an enthusiast photographer who has owned a Q for 4 years now, love shooting with it, but 28mm is starting to feel limiting and I'm looking for some new challenges in photography. I've always wanted to shoot an M, and doing some research it seems like a used M10 would be a fantastic way in to Leica rangefinder photography.

My question: Where would this community recommend as the best place(s) to look to find a reasonable deal on a used M10? I am based in British Columbia, Canada, and don't have any Leica stores nearby or a great camera store that stocks Leica within easy reach, so I'm looking primarily online. It looks like some reasonable deals come up on eBay, but I expect there may be some other / better options to consider?

Losing a lot on my M10

Bought an M10 3 weeks ago and I have been struggling with the patch focusing, I am now getting better at zone focus and hyperfocal distance. However I have a bit of a knee jerk personality and decided to sell it. I know I could add the EVF but that just adds size and somewhat defects the purpose.

I guess if I am honest, I love the retro feel, looks and simplicity but at heart I am a bit of a techno geek!

Its pretty much brand new, but I struggled to sell it (in UK) for £4250 which I think is a fare price for whats essentially brand new and not yet registered so it has a 2 year warranty.

Looks like I am going to have to maybe bring it down to (other used prices) and older M10's to around £3800 to get some interest. Part of me is reluctant to lose £1000 in 3 weeks, so I am on the fence about persevering with it longer.

Anyone else been here and what did you do, bite the bullet?

I recently bought a used M10 from a corporate Leica store in the US (Las Vegas location) and they shipped to me in New York without a problem. I personally found more peace of mind buying from a certified Leica store than online marketplaces (eBay, Facebook) though I'm sure plenty can be found there, too.

I just called around to different Leica stores until I found the used M10 I was looking for - seems like they get them in pretty regularly. One of the stores told me that the "corporate" Leica stores (i.e., owned by Leica) have a slightly higher threshold for the quality of used gear they'll accept compared to privately owned Leica stores. Something to keep in mind if you're looking around.

Good luck!

Four months ago, I bought a used M-P (240) in a very good condition from mpb.com for a fair price. Don't know whether they also do business in Canada.

I just bought a near mint silver M10 with 6 months left on the warranty on the Fred Miranda site. When it arrived, it looked like it hadn’t even been used.

I’ve bought and sold various camera gear on the site over the past 8+ years and have to say that I think it’s a fantastic site. Never had an issue in almost 70 transactions (knocking on wood as I type this). I have no affiliation at all but like that Fred runs the site with various discussion forums and also has a Buy/Sell board. You can sign up for something like 1, 3, 12 or 24 months to be eligible to buy/sell. Very affordable, especially compared to the large site that charges a huge fee for completed sales.

You can either reply to someone who has a FS (for sale) post or you can post a WTB (want to buy). The only problem I can think of for you if you’re new to the site is that experienced members may prefer buying or selling with someone who has a track record on the site. Definitely worth checking out though. Personally, I like that you’re dealing with like minded individuals who share an interest in photography…though some may be in to it for the gear as opposed to image making (horses for courses).

Here’s a link to the Buy/Sell Forum:

P.S. I generally find prices on Fred Miranda to be a 10% -15% discount to sites like KEH, B&H or one of the local US Leica stores (and you also avoid taxes which for a Leica, is a significant savings). Those sites provide a very valuable service in that you can return and you get typically get a warranty. In my case, I was able to find a silver M10 with time left on the warranty and paid $4400, which I found to be $500-$700 less than those other options.

Thanks all, these are extremely helpful recommendations. Leaning towards buying from a Leica Store. Looks like there are a couple of great condition M10s available from Leica SF specifically right now.

Aside from trying to avoid obvious wear and tear / visible scuffs, etc, are there any less-obvious things to look out for / prioritize when reviewing options? I'm tempted to pull the trigger on something now but am wondering if there is any reasons to wait and keep an eye on the market.

I have seen M10 go for as low $3700

if a new M11 get announced this month many people will be putting the original M10 on the marked and prices can go lower.

Most people want the new implementation of touch screen and quite shutter of the M10-P

but in electronic there is always a new one to wait for, you should just see what is important to you. A month ago I upgraded to the M10-R, very happy with it.

@Photoworks I hadn’t realised the M11 could be announced so soon. Is it expected this month?

Agreed on electronics! I debated considering an M10R, but ultimately I feel like that extra $$$ will be better spent on some glass. I don’t need the extra resolution or really care about a touch screen at this point.

M11is merely in the rumor stage; latest is on 11/11. As long as Leica remains viable, there will always be something around the corner.  The M10 has been discontinued (with the M10-P, M10-R and M10 Monochrom still in production), so price and product relationships have already been subject to change.

Leica Store SF is a good source, along with its sister stores in Walnut Creek and Palm Springs, which provide for a large used inventory.  Leica Miami also has a good used inventory, and prices might tend to be a bit higher, but they routinely have gear inspected and serviced (by Leica or DAG), as needed, prior to sale. Popflash often has lower prices on new or new-ish gear.

As an aside, I see your profile indicates UK location rather than Canada.

Jeff

@Jeff S right, I had seen the 11/11 date noted around. Feels like the M10 is at a sweet spot in features/price for me right now.

Thank you for the notes on those stores, extremely helpful. Re. my profile, I emigrated several years ago and evidently updating that here slipped my mind! Thanks for the note :)

Thanks guys, also very helpful.

Any consideration of the age of the body (serial #, if still under warranty, etc)? I'm assuming that if a body still has warranty most sellers would mention it in the listing.

I will put in my plug for Leica Store Miami.  I have bought a used M-10, several used lenses, a new CL, a new SL2 from them as well as a few other toys.  I have found the condition of the used equipment to be better than described and with a couple of lenses, I thought they had sent me a new one.  The photos of the used equipment are of the actual piece of equipment being sold. They are not stock pictures.  The people working there are most helpful and know Leica inside and out.  They also run the Red Dot Forum which is a grand source of information. I have no affiliation with the store, just a very satisfied customer.

+1, I agree on looking at Leica Miami. After watching one of their Red Dot forum videos where Josh talked about how he throughly detail cleans and inspects all of their used cameras that they sell in the store, it convinced me that when I buy pre-owned I’ll first look at Leica Miami (I love Josh’s secret of using the sticky part of post-it notes to clean dust around and under the shutter speed dial). Recently when I went searching for a pre-owned Silver M10P to buy, I went to straight to Leica Miami's site and found exactly what I was looking for; Josh answered all questions and they sent me hi-rez detailed pics of camera. One hint if you are looking for pre-owned gear on the Leica Miami site, first look in the ‘new arrivals’ as gear gets posted here first and from my observation, alot of it sells fast and get removed before it hits their main index page. Good luck in you search!

  • 4 weeks later...

Wanted to give a quick update here: I purchased a used (but basically like-new) condition M10 + 35mm Summilux from Leica SF and couldn't be happier with the purchase. I've been shooting for the last month and absolutely loving the rangefinder experience. I just ordered a TTArtisan 50mm 1.4 (broke the bank on the first kit, but really want to add a 50mm to my kit and it seems extremely well reviewed for the price).

Thank you to everybody here who helped guide my decision. Greatly appreciate your insight and learned a lot!

Best place is Russia as we have the highest amount of used Leica's for really low prices compared to USA / Europe.
For example on Avito (russian analogue of Craig's list) high quality like new leica M10 is 330 000 RUR, which is 4 200 USD or 3 300 EUR

Come to Russia ❤️
