Hello, I have a M10R that sometimes refuses to take a picture. The camera is on, usualy on aperture priority, and I focus and press the shutter. Nothing! After pressing the shutter a few times it eventually takes a shot. Today I was playing with some lenses and it happened at least three times in a few dozen shots. So much for the decisive moment!

before I panic and send the camera in for repair...does anyone have an idea what is wrong...

thank you!

That is not normal.

Maybe with cleaning contacts of battery and SD cards ?

Replace with another battery and/or SD card ?

Or false contact in shutter button/inside the camera, so must be sent to Leica.

If for peace of mind, I'd send it for repair...

Have you updated to the latest firmware? My M10R does this occasionally.

Do you use a soft release?

If so, does the problem persist without it?

Is there any difference in feeling when you press the shutter release than you're used to?

I'm asking because I've seen the shutter housing (the surrounding area around the shutter release itself) come loose and begin to unscrew, and screwing it down tight solved the problem. In that instance, what seemed to be the problem was that the shutter release was "sunk" a bit and pressing it had no effect. Press hard, or repeatedly, and it would take a picture every now and then. I screwed my soft release into my friend's camera, and unscrewed it while pulling up on the shutter release in an effort to un-sink it. It worked for one picture and stayed sunk afterward. It was during the second attempt to do the same thing that I realized the shutter housing itself was loose. Put a rubber band around it and cranked it clockwise to tighten. Problem went away and hasn't come back.

Sorry to hear

I bought the camera second hand from a leica store. The previous owner traded it in for a M10 reporter. The camera had no signs of use but I can’t say if a soft release button was ever used. I don’t use it. Anyway everything looks and feels tight. When the problem occurs the shutter just wont fire, no matter how many times you press the button. When I turn the camera on and off it goes again. When I change the exposure dial to a different setting it also fires again. During the time the camera shutter refuses, the camera keeps on metering. So it seems to be a software/electronic issue, but I am not sure. I have three assignments later this month that require me to shoot loads of frames. I am going to take a backup camera and send this one in after the shoots are done.
It is a major bummer to experience this. I upgraded to the R from a regular M10 that never failed me. Now my old Fuji XT2 has to save the day...

  • 1 year later...

Has Leica given anyone an explanation or provided any solutions for this problem?  I've sent mine in twice for the same thing.  The first time they replaced the sensor, and the second time they couldn't find anything wrong.  Now I'd like to sell it but I won't if it doesn't work properly.  As of yesterday, the shutter is still intermittently unresponsive.  Pisses me off.

Have a thought that might be worth trying. set the self timer to 2 secs. and see if the shutter responds to the camera telling it to fire.  Would that prove anything?  I have no idea, but it might. I realize that you can not shoot your assignments that way.  I just wonder if it would tell anything.

Has it been a while since you last took a picture with the camera?  Sometimes the camera will power down if no shots have been taken for a while.  Before I shoot, I partially depress the shutter button to make sure the camera is "awake".  After that does the camera fire on the next actuation of the shutter?

One thing that I have noticed, if the last picture is on the screen and some part of your face is touching the screen it will not take a picture.

As you are in Review Mode, touching the screen is instructing the camera via that user interface. I suggest that this is working as designed, on page 100 of the M10-R manual, the following is documented-

Review Mode

You can toggle back from review mode to recording mode at any time by tapping the shutter button

I have changed batteries allready

will try with new sd card. If problem persistsit will have to go back to Leica. That is a pity because I earn my money with this camera. I hope it doesn’t take forever!

A professional photographer has to have a few camera bodies. Cameras fail and need repair all the time.

If you’re not having to restart the camera for it to work again, then it is an issue with the shutter button. Take it to the Leica store.

Yes, but if your nose is touching the screen when in review mode the half press of the shutter button will not kick you out of review mode so the camera will not take a picture.
