Lovely structure and textures.  I wonder how it would look in black and white.  Did you try it?

I’ve never really been satisfied with my results when I’ve tried black and white.

here is the image below.

Actually I'm not very good at B/W so don't know why I am piping up!  A while back when I had difficulties with a B/W shot, some colleagues on here suggested to maximise the white and black points, raise the shadows and increase the contrast to taste.  So I have given it a go.  I'm sure others with more experinece could offer much better versions.  It's just that trees like this draw the eye because of their wonderful structure and texture and I am curious as to how well B/W treatment might bring that out.

I would just take the CL, the 18-56 and spare battery and card. Done.

Will do. Great advice, thank you. Just need the surge to disappear

I think it really depends on what you see and what you want to convey. In this shot you could focus on the texture of the bark, or you could increase the contrast still further so the tree trunk looks white. If you use LightRoom and/or SilverEfEx Pro you have many options to try.

If you use Lightroom, have you tried the Lightroom ‘Landscape’ preset.  Good point to go to and then adjust to your taste for a lot of landscape photos.
