IMO, "Character" is the word which describes weak lens for digital sensor (kind of results close to post 3), if not damaged one, like old scratched lens.

I have Nokton 35 1.4 II which shows a lot of "character" @f1.4.

Post 4 shows what I like. But it is not character, it is rendering :).

I liked Elmarit-M 28 2.8 rendering on M-E 220. It was not weak lens, rendering was different from modern lenses.  Modern rendering  is sometimes sterile, no difference. Like here is no difference on M9 sensor between CV CS 35 2.5 and much more expensive Summarit-M 35 2.5.

I also liked non sterile rendering on Rigid Cron. It has different color rendering, from newer versions of Crons. Yet, it is most sharp, less focus shift among all classic Crons I used on M-E 220.

I'm not different from majority  and like Sonnar.

I was able to get not trashed, clean, earlier J-3 for it.

At this time, I am enjoying the Voigtlander 50mm Nokton f1.2 on my M9. This image has only been resized no adjustments made, wont win any awards but shows a lot of character

50mm f1.5 Summarit (c. 1947-1957?). I've been using my '53 M-mount example on my M9Monochrom and M-D Typ-262 a very great deal (almost uniquely for the whole of February - images posted subsequently in relevant thread) and wide-open it renders in a fairly unique way to put it mildly.

At f1.5 not only is there paper-thin depth of field but the circle of sharpness doesn't extend far from centre-image...but 'Character'? It has that by the trailer-load.

It's a sort-of 'Jekyll and Hyde' lens; wide open it's pretty crazy (in, IMO, a rather beautiful way) but stopped-down to, say, f2.8 and beyond it behaves like any regular 50mm lens and from mid-apertures really is as sharp as anyone will ever need for 'normal' photography.

Both images have been posted before but, FWIW, here is a pair of images shot at f1.5; first from the Monochrom and the second from the M-D;

One of my favourite lenses apart of the Noctilux is the Zeiss Distagon 1.4/35mm. It is a highly underrated lens and not very common. I like the character, rendering, and the colours. The lens renders in particular clouds very nicely. Wide open, focus on aGusto.

I like the Thambar for painting. On M9 or film it's equally magnificient.

1949 Summitar 5cm. I think it handled the challenging light situation just as well as any modern lens. I'm not a boookayyy freak but I love the way it has drawn the top of the treeline.

The Summar is known for it's swirling bokeh. But if tamed it can be pleasing. This photo is on the M9 but this is a great lens used with film.

I've seen the image before but it's still an unalloyed pleasure to see it again.

Truly Beautiful in every way.

I have been very lucky with an old Canon 28mm f/2.8.  It gives me nice color and resolution.  It is not as painterly as that Thambar but it can be dreamy.  Here's a couple, both are color photos, and I have posted them before but put them up here as examples.  Both are at f/5.6.  I'll poke around an see if I can identify any Jupiter 50mm/f.20 or 85mm/f.20.  They render a softer, more pastel color palette. But this is a vague and imprecise effort for unless one can take the same photo over and over with different lenses we really do not know.  But, we generally do get to see some nice images in the discussion.  And there will be a tendency of resolution and color for lenses we can assume is a profile.
