The 50mm f/1,2 Noctilux Image Thread

Another comparison I decided to do was something with print, in order to show the difference in sharpness of the letters between f/1.2 and f/2.8.

If sharpness was the only consideration, I'd be shooting with the 50 APO or the new 35 APO. However, I'm willing to give up a bit of that in order to get the artistic and, in my opinion, beautiful out of focus areas.

This is a challenging lens. Sometimes it just doesn't work and other times--just wow! Currently I'm finding it quite to my liking at middle distance, wide open in bright contrasty light. Wide open (today I was using it on an SL2) the inherent low contrast brings the bright daylight under control in a very attractive manner. I will append a couple shots to this post tomorrow when I have a proper computer to render the files.

I agree. I'm hoping I don't wear out that look. As shown in your pics, the lens sharpens up across the frame and gains contrast at 2.8 (and continues that way as stopped down). I think knowing when to stop down will need to be learned so the shot doesn't look overworked. However, of these 2 shots displayed, I prefer the one that is wide open.

A bit of focus shift is also part of the challenge for close range shooting. I did some chart tests yesterday and in stopping down from f/1.2 to f/4 at minimum focus distance, there was a shift toward back focus of about 3/8 inch. This came as no surprise since the lens doesn't have a floating element.

Today was another "hard day at the office." I got together with my arch rival at the billiards hall for an afternoon session. We've been friends, but also fierce pool opponents, for about 45 years.

I think these two shots really show how the Noctilux f/1.2 is two entirely different lenses depending on the aperture. One is wide open, the other at f/8. Stopped down, this is an extremely good 50mm lens. Used wide open, the out of focus areas are beautiful.

These were done in very bright sunlight, around noon, wide open

SL2

IMHO, the inherent low contrast wide open is working to great advantage in these particular, and similar conditions.

The colors and contrast look great. I assume you used a ND filter?

I just checked out your website. Beautiful work!

Thank you for the kind words.

I did not use an ND filter, the SL2 goes to 1/8000 mechanical and 1/40000 electrical shutter. Speeds were 1/5000 and 1/6400.

M10 would have required an ND filter, but alas my M10R rangefinder went out of calibration and is in Germany getting made right....

This lens has been sitting on my shelf for a few months. The stars have aligned and Spring is in the air! First time using this lens in a real shoot and I must say the swirly magic is REAL!

SL2, 50mm 1.2 Noct wide open. Profoto B1X strobe.

Flu, what a fabulous representation of what the new 50 1.2 can produce, just lovely in so many ways and measures, plus very good proof of your photography skills!
