Leica press release: Maximum performance in a compact construction: the APO-Summicron-M 35 With the APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH., Leica Camera releases yet another M-lens whose optical performance can hardly be bettered. As with the successful APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH., the designers were given just one brief: to achieve maximum imaging performance without compromise – the only difference being that this time, the lens in question has a moderate wide-angle focal length of 35 mm. The result is a lens whose sharp detail rendition will challenge not just current, but also future image sensors; in addition, the APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. is the only M-lens with a closest focusing distance of just 30 centimetres, which – in conjunction with the high light sensitivity – opens up a host of new compositional possibilities. This exceptional performance capability is made possible by the elaborate lens design, combined with the high-precision manufacturing processes at the Leica production plant. The ten lens elements are divided into five groups; three elements feature aspherical surfaces (one of them on both sides). Six elements are made of glasses with anomalous partial dispersion, which not only reduce chromatic aberrations to almost zero, but also provide apochromatic correction – a quality that is rarely found in lenses of this focal length. The APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. also delivers outstanding results at close range, thanks to a floating element that ensures a consistent performance at all distances. The focus ring has a particularly large throw of 300°, enabling precise focusing at all times despite the extended closest focusing distance. Via the rangefinder, the lens can be focused at a distance as close as 70 cm – at which point a slight resistance can be felt on the focus ring. At distances between 70 and 30 cm, the photographer can optionally focus via the camera’s display screen in Live View mode, the Visoflex electronic viewfinder, or the Leica FOTOS app. The innovative construction of the lens hood, in combination with highly effective anti-reflective coatings, makes the APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. extremely resistant to any type of stray light – allowing the photographer to shoot into the sun or other sources of light. Optical flaws such as chromatic aberration and distortion are almost entirely corrected. This – together with the extremely high, edge-to-edge contrast rendition – facilitates an especially pronounced bokeh at open aperture. Seeing as the aperture is almost circular (thanks to the use of eleven blades), this effect is also retained when the lens is stopped down. Even more than any other M-lens, the APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. only has to be stopped down for compositional purposes – never for exposure control. The rendition quality at the centre and edges of the image is already so outstanding that there is no scope for further improvement by stopping down. Despite its exceptional performance, the APO-Summicron-M 35 f/2 ASPH. is both compact and light-weight. With its classic reportage focal length, this is a lens for every photographic situation that can be used on any current and future model of the M series, as well as the Leica SL2 and SL2-S.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! mirekti Posted March 4, 2021 Share #7 Posted March 4, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Close focusing distance of 30cm. It could be Leica is cooking something with the rangefinder for future cameras.
Gregm61 Posted March 4, 2021 Share #8 Posted March 4, 2021 (edited) The new hood design looks very compact, like a shrunken version of the 35mm f2.4 Summarit hood. Edited March 4, 2021 by Gregm61
wlaidlaw Posted March 4, 2021 Share #9 Posted March 4, 2021 If only I did not have too many 35mm lenses already, an LTM Summaron 35/2.8, a Summicron ASPH 35/2 and a chrome Summilux 35/1.4 ASPH. I would need to sell the latter two if I was to consider an APO and I suspect the APO may have depressed the prices for these. Jono's spectacular photos on his website do generate quite a lot of GAS. Film users can look forward to using a Minox like measuring chain... aka. a 700mm long piece of string with knots at 300mm and 500mm.
lincoln_m Posted March 4, 2021 Share #11 Posted March 4, 2021 I've just seen the price! That saves me wondering if I need one Its even more than the 50 APO. I hope Leica do it in Silver like the 50-APO and other new lenses now they can do silver anodised aluminium, I really don't know why the black lenses have orange paint for the feet scale anymore because the only camera that had some orange was the M7 (discontinued) all the M digitals / film have red, white, black markings whether they are black or silver bodies. The feet scale should be red paint even on black lenses so that they all match nicely. If you're spending such large sums on a quality lens you should expect it to match the current camera bodies. I suspect one would need the M10-R to be able to see the differences, say, from the 35 summilux-fle or 35 summicron-asph.

There is no way I could do it through focus peaking. My thoughts are (this is purely my imagination) that Leica might have figured out how to insert a patch through some kind of display i.e. there would be no physical mirror. I have no clue and I am slightly digressing. 😂 I’d like to see more sample photos. Edited March 5, 2021 by mirekti

If you can't make them, why aggravate us with reviews? These lenses have been relatively freely available in the UK for the last couple of months. In the USA, people have been walking into Leica Stores and buying them off the shelf. I don't know if like me, you ordered yours through a dealer, because currently they are only being marketed via Leica's own outlets. In another PR triumph, Leica did not advise customers or many dealers that this was the case, so folk who like me, ordered via a dealer were left waiting in limbo for lenses that were never going to arrive. I kicked up a stink with Leica UK over the way they had handled this and just like it is the squeaky wheel that gets the oil, my dealer got sent a lens within 10 days of my writing to the MD of Leica UK, expressing my anger over the way I had been treated. I had been waiting 6 months with the ordered 35 APO-M lens being paid in full, when Leica had originally told my dealer that it would be delivered within 3 days and then with no explanation, rescinded the allocated delivery. The dealer was then advised of 4 further estimated delivery dates, which in reality were never going to happen, due to policy of selling only via Leica stores. I don't imagine the dealer network feels too happy over this policy on the 35 APO-M either. Interestingly the M11 seems to have been handled very differently. I spoke to my usual dealer in Scotland, the day after the M11 announcement to order a Visoflex 2 for my M10-R. I could have bought an M11 from them on that day off the shelf, so maybe Leica have learnt the lesson of announcing products with no stock and cutting out the dealers. drdaveelliott Posted January 15, 2022 Share #16 Posted January 15, 2022 In the US, I ordered a 35 APO from the authorized Chicago dealer. He says he's never told when or if Leica is shipping anything and he won't tell me where I've am on the waiting list. He says it's the same deal with the M 11. He can't promise when or if it might be available but was glad to take my 500 dollar deposit.
