Giving up Adobe Subscription

Recommended Posts

I have decided that I do not get full value (read ANY value) from paying Adobe £20 per month and therefore will be stopping my subscription. The online model just doesn't work for me and I don't need to be accessing tens of thousands of DNGs while out of the house. I also have found that I don't like the interface in the online versions of the software and am constantly returning to the standalone programs.

Incredibly, I have this lot installed on my HD...

Presumably, access to the online storage will go by the wayside. I keep local copies of all my DNG files in any case, but it wouldn't hurt to download a second copy from the Adobe Cloud just in case.

What else do I need to look out for when I stop paying them?

Thanks

where is the metadata for each photo saved ? in the catalog or em,bedded in the DNGs  e.g i press cmd-S after i finish working on a photo, so the settings are saved inside the DNG or as an xmp file, that way i dont care about huge catalogs.

My LR Classic monthly subscription is £9.98, which considering the use I make of LR, PS & Bridge is reasonable. If/when you decided to cancel make sure you do it at (or close to) the annual renewal date otherwise there is a penalty (IIRC, 10% of the remaining period cost).

I’m still on the last “classic” version, LR 6.14. The idea of a fixed subscription just rubs me the wrong way.

But - the newest version has been hugely improved over time, in noise and sharpening, colour management and colour grading - and you cannot upgrade to those improvements. (and the upgrades would have been more expensive than your subscription over the years)

BTW, the only online bit I use is moving photographs from my phone into my PC/Laptops system by LR Mobile (free)

I guess you're paying for a Tb of storage as well? I was doing the same, but last year gave up the online storage, and backup via Backblaze instead. I still paid the £10/month for the basic app. Then I added Indesign - I can see myself making quite a lot of use of it for books, but it's another £18/month. I cancelled another subscription I no longer need to compensate.

How do you manage to pay 20 Pounds? The going rate for the photography package is 12.99 Euro over here.

I'm not sure I understand, Paul. The Photography plan comes with LR Classic CC.

The UI and functionality of the online versions are just nowhere near as good.

Yes, I'm sure. However, the subscription is also for the full versions of PS and LR. Maybe I'm misunderstanding some of the discussion but Adobe CC subscriptions are not for online versions of their apps but for the full desktop apps plus online (and iPad) versions of these apps as a bonus.

There are real advantages to using Adobe for image storage rather than anyone else, but in the end I didn't find them worth paying for, and there were no signs that the basic functionality of LR CC was ever going to keep up with LR Classic CC.

I'm not really a LR user, I find that PS fits my mind better, but FWIIW, the CC subscription includes both LR Classic CC and LR CC. As for the UI of PS, I cannot say that it has any major change over the years.features have been added - some of them quite useful to essential for me, some items have been moved into another window, and that is about all. I find the improvement in algorithms the most obvious change over the years, judging by the results. However, different hats fit different people.
