Patrik Posted February 21, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 21, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having just bought my 2nd hand MP and not having shoot film for about 20 years. On my late M6 TTL I had the M-grip and on my digital M's I use the Match Technical Thumbs-Up. I came across these pics in my search for a MP. I don't know the ref no for this Thumbs Up, but would like to you if there is one without the cold shoe, and also if anyone has any feedback? I have always felt the need for extra grip on the M6 and digital M's. Thanks! Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted February 21, 2021 Posted February 21, 2021 Hi Patrik, Take a look here MP & Thumbs-Up?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted February 21, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 21, 2021 Seeing other way of good grip as secondary feature. I'm happy user of Leicavit-M or Motor-M on M-A A bit heavier but with big or heavy lens (Noctilux 50 or Summilux 75 mainly) , the handling of the setup is a joy, for me. I've tried without those "wind-on add" also, using the wind-on lever as "thumb rest", like on M10-D ! not so bad after all. Welcome, dear visitor! Patrik Posted February 21, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted February 21, 2021 Tried the Motor-M on my late M6 TTL, but for me it never felt right. Hence hoping for input on the Thumbs Up. The Leicavit looks very good, but is not for me.
wattsy Posted February 21, 2021 Share #4 Posted February 21, 2021 (edited) The thumbs-up was meant to stand-in for the absent film wind lever on the digital bodies. It seems a bit peculiar to me to add one to a film body because you already have a perfectly good lever to hold on to (if you like holding the camera like that – personally, I don't) and it looks like the thumbs-up would get in the way of smooth film winding. Looks very awkward. Edited February 21, 2021 by wattsy
Patrik Posted February 21, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted February 21, 2021 Well yes agree but intersted in the function, if there is one. @wattsy , do you shoot with the thumb resting at the lever half-cocked?
a.noctilux Posted February 21, 2021 Share #6 Posted February 21, 2021 (edited) Patrik, had you tried to unfold the wind-on lever after full-cocked ? For me it's strong enough to use as thumb rest, even if I don't use it this way. Side note... Some people (me) like better articulated lever style M4/M6. Patrik Posted February 21, 2021 Author Share #7 Posted February 21, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) I havent received the camera yet, bought only yesterday... By unfold I guess pulling the lever out about a third or thereabout? Sounds good in therory! 👍🏻
a.noctilux Posted February 21, 2021 Share #8 Posted February 21, 2021 Yes 😉 I never use the M4/M6 wind lever feature as thumb rest. But in my memory, I think that I had used the feature "thumb rest" without knowing it for years 😇. Have a look at the wind lever position on the M4 ! At resting position 🙃 Welcome, dear visitor! Graham (G4FUJ) Posted February 21, 2021 Share #9 Posted February 21, 2021 When I bought my M8 it came with one of those "Thumbs Up" type additions. I found it got in my way of holding the camera. It's somewhere in a side pocket of a camera bag. I'll never use it, suppose I should just put it on that auction site...
Patrik Posted February 21, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted February 21, 2021 Looks perfect indeed! Hopefully this works similar on the MP as well! Thanks! 😊👍🏻

For me it has been the other way around. Started to use on M8, and felt very natural and have continued ro use on M and M10-PR.
a.noctilux Posted February 21, 2021 Share #12 Posted February 21, 2021 It does work the same on MP/M-A but with metallic sensation. Why I prefer plasticky ( much hated by other ! ) more comfort for my thumb, of M4/M6 style lever ...
Patrik Posted February 21, 2021 Author Share #13 Posted February 21, 2021 Time will tell but liked the plastic on my M6’s...

No and, to be honest, I'd never heard of the practice until the thumbs-up was introduced for the digital bodies. In the past I have used the Motor-M and the 14405 grip with varying degrees of success but I've long since settled on using an M film camera without any accessory grip.

RayD28 Posted February 22, 2021 Share #16 Posted February 22, 2021 Quote The winder works for perfect for me and my MP. Not saying a Thumbs Ups is a wast because I use on on my M240. I just see no need with the MP.

The Thumbs Up and it’s clones and Soft Releases are solutions to problems that never existed. That MP looks like it was built from scrap.
