gteague Posted February 14, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) this dude is one strange bird, but i read him off and on because he writes so much he has to be right a lot of the time just due to random chance. and don't get me started on the nosebleed prices he wants for stuff in his store: $400 for a neckstrap, $600 for a pouch, or $1200 for a bag. but that's ok, i'm sure not the target customer. and this review is by far and away the most comprehensive q2 review i've found anywhere and has a ton of useful info which is mostly accurate as far as i can verify: https://www.overgaard.dk/Leica-Q2-digital-rangefinder-Page-2.html but he makes a claim i've never heard before, that ois degrades the image and shouldn't be used for stills. i think someone told him it should be used on a tripod and he has stayed confused ever since. i seriously doubt ois could degrade an image more than me trying to shoot at 1/8th of a second as shaky as i've gotten in my old age. "OIS for still photos (is a no-no) The Leica Q2 also offer the possibility for OIS for still photos, and by default it is set to Off from the factory. And it should stay that way. It will degrade the image quality a little, and there is no reason to turn ON Image Stabilization for a 28mm lens on a camera that goes high in ISO. Image Stabilization is usually for tele lenses where where small movements at low shutter speeds can cause blur. I can't think of any condition where there would visible blur on a 28mm lens. There is an ongoing discussion if OIS degrade image quality. In theory, of course it does. But usually you use OIS when not using it would be a worser choice. OIS on the Leica Q doesn't seem to delay focus or exposure (there is no wait for it to "kick in" as in other systems). Leave it off." anyone agree with him and can back up the claim? coming from decades of film cameras, i think memory cards and stabilization are two of the absolute best modern photography innovations. tks, /guy Edited February 14, 2021 by gteague

gteague Posted February 14, 2021 Author Share #6 Posted February 14, 2021 i will say he got one thing exactly right. several well-known reviewers said that the ooc jpgs were total crap and unusable, thus it was imperative that one shoot raw. if they'd been talking about my cl i might have been more sympathetic since i had to max out the style settings to get jpgs i could live with. he claimed they were very usable and i agree. but in the v3.0 firmware update (i think) leitz says they improved the jpg processing and indeed i'm getting beautiful sooc jpgs by only tweaking the sharpening which i always do because i don't like to edit. so it's possible the earlier reviewers didn't have the upgrade. /guy
