I found quite a significant amount of sample variations between the original 35 FLE summiluxes, mostly within core sharpness and chromatic aberration territory.
The one I own now is a champ in both. An amazing copy to shoot wide open, just like the Prophet Peter said.

I wrote to Leica for the ultimate list. They have yet to answer... fingers crossed.

And do we have it?
[I searched but google knows not what I want …]

with the M10-R I more interested in this rendering! They bring out more than’ just’ sharpness.

There will be no list.
Leica Global Corporate Communications says Karbe lenses are the endeavour of the entire group and an individual cannot be singled out. Translated from German:

"Thank you very much for your inquiry. We are pleased that you are interested in doing an article on Leica lenses and the role of Peter Karbe. Unfortunately, I have to inform you that such an overview is not present. Lens development at Leica Camera AG is defined as group effort of a competent team of experts. And viewed as a team effort, the participation of individual colleagues, including the participation of Peter Karbe, is not explicitly recorded and documented in the various lens projects. Therefore we unfortunately cannot be of any help at this point and hope for your understanding. We wish you all the best and stay healthy!"

I already expected that, but there is a way out:

why not make a list of the design philosophy 'ourselves'? By backward reasoning?

Well, then I have a picture of a 'Karbe Philosophy Lens', that is,

  • it has a same fingerprint in MTF wide-open to F11. I mean, all the lines stay the same all the time. Resolution remains the same, aberations do not pop up nor disappear, colour architecture is great.
  • There are several lense that would qualify. But though exceptional, the Summicron 50mm type IV/V does not qualify - the APO does and has been super modernized.

The Macro-Elmar 90mm, here in a rather close-up shot, fits the bill. A hommage to Elias Canetti it seems.

I now have several lenses with this style (24, 75, 90mm) and yesterday I was a bit too late on the auction site for another one.

I believe the grossly underrated 24mm Elmar is a Karbe design. Here is a snapshot of my daughter with it on the m10r, not a wonder shot by any stretch but an example of the lack of distortion, soft fall off and close up sharpness.

Surprising small plane of focus on M10R. Less than 5 cm, and that for 24mm!

Paris, just 1 cm of snow and look what popped up.
