Hi, I'm new poster to this amazing forum after being Leica C&P (Collector&Photographer) over 18 years and currently 'decide' to return in film world.

In the last week, I acquired this Leica Standard in a trusted Germany based dealer, it's No. 105901, one of first 5000 production when Leica introduced Model E in 1932. As its S/N closed to end of 106000, I believe it was manufactured by Leica in late 1933. Overall condition fare good considering its age of 88 elder than my father, I'm quite satisfied.

To my knowledge, I understood all Leica Standard(model E) were no lugs except some late 40' model using iiic body. HOWEVER, it's too odds that my first-batch-Leica Standard was WITH lugs, I checked carefully, and quite sure both lugs not 'upgraded' later as aging abrasion 100% matched to body elsewhere.

Can I get any advice if this Leica Standard is true? How and why it came with original lugs?

Here comes more detail about lugs. I compared it with my iiia, these lugs about 0.5mm narrow than iiia ones and edge thinner as well. It's Nickel pained over brass.

Does anyone have similar Leica Standard (E) with lugs installed? I'm quite interested to know.

Your lugs look like they were added after manufacture. Some Early I Model As, such as this one from 1929, which were sold with an ETRIN case , FODIS/FODUA rangefinder and FILCA cassettes came from the factory with strap lugs further down on the body side and not high up like your ones. It seems to have been an option with the kit. See photos below.

I also have a II Model D from late 1932 which has lugs added slightly further up. The camera has mixed nickel and chrome furniture and the lugs may have been added when the installation of the chrome items was done.

Thanks Will,

You have amazing collections of early Leica. I compared my Standard and IIIa side-by-side and three differences obviously about lugs:

1. (My Standard) lugs more 'narrow' and 'thin';

2. (My Standard) base of lugs is exactly flat matched to skin (little curved base) vs. (IIIa) edge of base obviously higher than skin <similar as your IA in picture 1 and 2>;

3. (My Standard) Nickel finished on brass vs. (IIIa) Chrome finished on brass

I wonder, if Leica have upgrade kit (or cassettes with lugs), why my Standard model E using different spec?

Sorry so many questions as I am too serious but it's enjoyable and interesting to find truth, isn't it?
