No, the one on Peter Loy's list is a Summicron (as is mine) the one on this list is a Summilux and is the first time I have seen a picture of it.

The picture below shows the entire M39 series produced by Leica for the Japanese market. The Summicron 50mm is attached to my IIIg (just so that yours does not feel too lonely), whereas the Summilux 50mm is attached to my Voigtländer Bessa R. The Summicron 35asph sits in the middle. Those lenses were originally intended for the Japanese market only, but rumor has it that the Japanese importer overestimated demand and ordered too many, which then could not be sold in Japan, which is why those lenses were subsequently offered through other channels as well. Interestingly, when I bought my lenses, they were considerably cheaper than their regular M-series counterparts (and came with an original Leica LTM to M adapter, too). Looking at today's prices, that seems to have changed quite a bit.

In my personal view, the Summilux is almost too big for the IIIg, but makes an ideal companion for the Bessa R (which btw is a wonderful evolution of the IIIg, with its M-type rangefinder and TTL metering).

Thanks for that. I see what you mean about the Summilux. My two Summicrons were a lot cheaper than seems to be the going price now. Both appeared to be unused when I bought them.

Just as a curios, does anyway the Summilux fit fine onto a IIIG ? It has a larger diameter than the old Summilux LTM - see JC Picture - and the IIIG has the RF/VF unit slightly protruding over the front surface... ( I suppose it fits... should have been an incredible mis-design for a "special series" to not take in account the IIIG...)

Luigi,

Yes, the Summilux may be attached to the IIIg (and any other Leica LTM model) without problems. I have used it on my IIIg, and the results were very good indeed. However, as I said, it is a relatively big and heavy lens (all brass, just like the older chrome version M-mount Leica lenses) and in my view the combination with a Barnack Leica is therefore not ideal. It is perfectly balanced and feels right at home on the Bessa R though. Of course, it may also be used on any M mount camera with an adapter.

now we have triplets

That's it, romualdo! we have now passed the quadruped... sorry : the "quadriplet".

N.B.: for the collectors who would not have understood our "pecole-romualdo" dialog, it concerns only the Leica IIIg/Summicron 50 specialists.

But I did.

Traded in six other lenses to get it.

It arrived this morning, in the snow.

Just to follow up on Andreas' comment, all of the lenses fit readily on the 111g and the Barnack cameras; I agree that the Summilux is a little too heavy for that style of camera but does fit readily on any of the film or digital M cameras.  The 35 sits most comfortably on the Barnack range being that little bit smaller and lighter and is also very much at home on the M3, using an adapter.  I have used the more expensive Millich adapters but the Leica ones seem to focus more accurately.

The pictures below show the Summilux and the 35 Summicron on a 111f Red Dial.  The blurred background of the second image includes the 35 on the 111g

An unlikely combination. My Leica IIId and Summilux.

My Leica IIId and Summilux.

Ha, on January 13th you said you had seen a picture of the LTM Summilux for the first time, and now there is one on your IIId??  And here am I, thinking the corona virus is highly infectious. Obviously, GAS beats that by a mile (as it does not even need personal contact 🙂).

Enjoy your new lens!

Very true Andy. Just after I posted, I saw one for sale so took the plunge. I tend to believe you when you say GAS beats corona and it is made worse by being confined to barracks with too much time to search the internet for "bargains?". GAS is not so deadly as Covid-19 but does far more damage to your bank balance. Mind you the Summilux was a bargain compared to the IIId. 🙂
