I’ll correct myself on this one. One area where having 8s exposure for multi-shot may bring value would be for combining separately exposed foreground and sky images which is fairly common practice in astro. So, if one wanted to expose the foreground separately, an 8x8s multi-shot exposure for a combined 64s exposure may also open up new possibilities.

So according to John Kreidler, Leica Pro Product Specialist, the 1s exposure limit in multi-shot mode is because it uses an electronic shutter. The electronic shutter’s maximum exposure limit being 1s, which explains why multi-shot is limited to 8x1s long.

Something doesn’t quite add up here. The max shutter duration for electronic shutter is 60s according to the instructions manual.

Alright, I just noticed a really interesting difference between the SL2 and SL2-S.

SL2 electronic shutter limit is from 1s to 1/40000s

SL2-S electronic shutter limit is from 60s to 1/16000s

So it’s conceivable that Leica may be able to expand the exposure duration in multi-shot mode for the SL2-S in future FW updates but for the SL2, it is maxed out at 1s. I imagine that the electronic shutter is used to avoid vibration from the shutter in multi-shot mode to maximize stability of the camera.

Not the type of astro-photography I usually do but great wide-field fun on vacation without an equatorial mount. These are taken with the Sigma fp-L but I think the SL2 should work similarly. Lens is the Sigma 14-24 dg dn at f2.8. 15 and 20 second exposures at ISO 3200. New London, NH.

Setting Crescent Moon awash in its "own illuminance" with Venus close by. I was a bit chuffed with my first attempt at Astro - SL 601 M 21 SEM.
