Want to get SL2 or SL2S , but what to do with the existing SL ?

Want to get the Sl2 or Sl2s for  IBIS and the newer electronics. I don't want to sell the existing SL ( may only get only  US$2000  where I live ) and look for a good reason(s) for keeping it.

A backup L mount camera is not important for me as, I  (a70 yr. old hobbyist) will not  take two SL's out shooting due to their weight.  I  may  more likely take my M10 or QP as the second camera.  

Hence looking for good  ideas of using this still very nice  SL (601)  for  innovative way .

Just kidding. SL used priced will dropped again. It will be a bargain but heavy alternative to M10 + Visoflex

I have been thinking about this SL conundrum too. Over here we have an agency who collect old cameras and supply the disadvantaged and other folks with disabilities etc.

The other option is use the SL and Fotos app along with motion detector for a security monitor at home? Probably the wifi will disengage after a few minutes

The best option in my view would be to have a spare spare SL. Having the knowledge that there is always another SL in the cabinet could be very comforting.

The SL is a design classic.....Consider putting it in a glass display on a stand and treat it as a work of art. Take it out every now and then for a little bit of nostalgia.

Its  a camera which will keep on giving.

Give it away. Find a local school with a photographic department. Find a charity that uses photography with disadvantaged children. If you don't need the $2000 of value, I'm sure you can find plenty who would find it very useful.

FWIW, when I bought the SL2, I sold my SL on ebay for significantly more than dealers would pay; you have to accept a bit of risk (e.g. potential dissatisfied buyers), but normal ebay precautions help with that.

Perhaps keep it to use with longer M lenses if you have any (90mm, 135mm). The full time EVF can also make faster M lenses easier to focus accurately (50 Noctilux, 75 Summilux-SL). Adapt any other lenses you own ... ?

Of course you can use an SL2(S) for any of this too, so I really don’t see why you shouldn’t just sell it to offset the trade-up cost.

What is the worth of a car after 3 years of use? The advantage of Leica M equipment is, that it remains its value for collectors. The only viewfinder system camera, that started as a collectors item 100 years ago and still is on the market.

Find a technician prepared to convert the SL 601 for IR photography by fitting the necessary pass filter to the sensor ... ACS have converted Leica T cameras for infrared photography and might be able to convert an SL

Yes I’ve just kept mine as it’s not worth selling and use it with m lenses I think it has a better m sensor then the SL2 as with a 28+ I get a fair bit of corner smearing with the SL2

Thank you so much for sharing the above ideas  and experience :

Can't trash it as I don't know which recycle bin to put in :  metal  or glass or electronics ( I have to pay them money to remove it )

My smart  nephew will ask for a SL lens first before he will accept the old camera.  He will even ask me for some film allowance. 

I don't have much paper for a paper weight nowadays.  May be as  a door stopper --- definitely  in the way for my wife and she definitely will be in the way of my getting the new camera.    

Yeah, the  SL2 (s) will handle  all the lenses  SL, M, R etc.

Don't get me wrong the proceeds of selling it for ??? is useful for anyone (myself included ).  I am not too keen on doing any business negotiation now.

With the Covid 19,  most  activities had been suspended, all schools are closed and charity donation bins and boxes on non essential items has been sealed. No body wants to  interact with anyone.

IR modifications may be interesting . In fact I'd  like to have a monochrome camera... wonder there is such a service for converting to monochrome ?

Most probably I would double  check with my  dealer to see what the Sl is worth to him as a trade in when the SL2s come in. 

As a Plan B:    

I'll  get glass case to keep it for my 10 year old grandson as the " First Leica FF mirrorless SLR styled aluminium block ".  I already  have a brand new Leica O-series reserved for him  (the Leica made replica of course )

Am in a similar situation to the OP - I really like the build quality and feel of my original SL and not sure I can face letting it go (!). Been thinking hard about switching to the SL2-S but beginning to question myself.....all the tech improvements won’t give me better images, great images don’t need to be taken with a sensor with X stops extra dynamic range.....  Think I will spend on glass.

The SL (601) will continue to deliver outstanding images. Get the SL2 for high resolution imaging such as landscape, and keep the lower resolution SL-1 for street and general reportage. For these applications, 47 MP is overkill and the SL1 will be just fine.

16-35 or 24-90 on SL / 90-280 on SL2

Messenger bag is too much weight on one shoulder, bad balance on bike .

Looking for a good fitting backpack with dual side access to carry both with hoods on and with easy access/ likely vertically with bodies down?

Maybe 24-90's hood on 90-280.

Agree !  Weight of the camera(s) will  become  more of an issue for some of us retirees who enjoy travelling to places not necessarily reachable by car.  A well designed light backpack will be a godsend.

My  second camera had alway been a lighter one with compatible lens to the main one . Using 2 SL s and carrying them on a trip will be too  "rich"  for  my body.

 Just sell it and move on. Just think carefully if the SL wouldn't last you a bit, especially with lockdowns and travel restrictions.

I would think giving the pace that Leica now has we see SL3 in 2 years or so.

Maybe focus on lenses or invest into a printer, which is what I did to get through 20/21

I am frustrated that Sl2-S came this late, this one would have won me over but now with pre owned SL I am going to stick with it until SL3 comes.

Maybe explore Leica S. Typ 007 is flooding the market.

The SL (601) is still useful in cases where you don't need image stabilization (tripod for example). Also,when using flash the SL2 has a very odd behavior when shooting in A and P mode. With flash the original SL is definitively better until the bug is fixed by Leica. For the time being I decided to keep both.

Having two similar cameras is very useful for a backup and for convenience when using different lenses in a dynamic setting.

It is overkill only if you never crop. I do tend to crop a number of images, not all by a long way, but I value the 47MP to do that.
