Narsuitus Posted December 10, 2020 Share #1  Posted December 10, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use a Leitz Canadian 90mm f/2 Summicron with built-in retractable lens hood (serial number 2659637). Until recently, I have never needed to attach a filter to it. I thought my lens accepted 58mm filters but was unable to attach one. I also tried 49, 52, 55, and 62mm filters but none worked. What filter size does this lens accept or is there some trick to mounting the filter? Welcome, dear visitor! BrianS Posted December 10, 2020 Share #2 Â Posted December 10, 2020 (edited) My 90mm F2 Summicron, V1- uses 48mm filters. The Nikkor 8.5cm F2, Canon 50/1.4 LTM, Canonet Ql17 GIII also use 48mm filters. I found a good set of Hoya filters in 48mm "NOS" a couple years ago. Canon movie cameras also used them through the 1970s. Edited December 10, 2020 by BrianS
a.noctilux Posted December 10, 2020 Share #3  Posted December 10, 2020 (edited) Maybe E48, like the "I" first version link to Wiki this version with this type of focus ring "II" may need E49 filter but maybe not if you've tried, Leitz mystery 😉. At that period E48 filter was well provided. I have some E48 Canon (for my 1.4/50 LTM for example). edit : after searching in docs, the E48 filters are needed in lenses with serial n° to 2 997 000 after that # E49 filter Edited December 10, 2020 by a.noctilux

BrianS Posted December 10, 2020 Share #5 Â Posted December 10, 2020 Be careful not to overtighten the filters- the name ring is concave and the filter can hang up on it. That happened to me- the filter ring came off with the filter, and I had to use two rubber mats to get the filter off. The name ring easily screws back in. Â I even found a Canon 48mm Hot Mirror filter - but sold it with a Canon 85mm F2 Rangefinder lens.
adan Posted December 10, 2020 Share #6 Â Posted December 10, 2020 Leitz used the 48mm filters for several lenses up through the 1970s - 90 Summicron, plus the 21mm Super-Angulon f/3.4 and the 28mm Elmarits v.1/2. B+W still makes them.
Narsuitus Posted December 11, 2020 Author Share #7 Â Posted December 11, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks to each and every one of you for the valuable and timely information you provided. I usually shoot studio portraits with a medium format SLR and a 35mm SLR. I tend to use my Leica M6 for outdoor, available light, and casual portraits. I have never used filters on my 90mm f/2 Leitz lens but wanted to try some of my soft-focus filters on my M6. Based on your information, I will buy a 48 to 52 step-up ring.
