A quick look at the definition possible with the VM Apo-Lanthar 50 combined with a high resolution sensor - in this case, the Sigma fp-L. I don't recall if this was taken at f2 or f2.8. Full frame field of view contrasted with a full resolution crop... color and shadows have been adjusted - no sharpening or other processing applied. DNG converted to jpeg.

OK Alan you've convinced me now 🙂 I should have one by tuesday

Here is a window light portrait made with the 50mm APO Lanthar on a Leica M240, ISO 1600, at f2.4. Hello guest! Please register or sign in to view the hidden content. Hallo Gast! Du willst die Bilder sehen? Einfach registrieren oder anmelden!

I think because all of the Leica 50mm apo lenses ever produced  are all factory coded that the camera automatically detects the Leica 50mm apo regardless of what setting the lens detection is on.  So, you will never need to manually select a LEICA 50mm apo. Why fill up the selection  menu with codes and make the list needlessly longer--thus unneeded more scrolling) if that lens is always selected automatically.   One of the benefits of buying a Leica lens.
