I experienced same when first acquired my 'ex demo' S1R ... thus could not use the SL 24-90 and used legacy lenses in manual focus. Problem was remedied by a camera 'reset' as detailed on page 83 of the instruction manual.

FW v1.7 works fine. I had first updated to v1.6 which had quite some bugs (especially with touch-AF). With FW v1.7 head and eye recognition works fine (better than with v1.5).
