Ah, they are upholstery studs - not navigation markers as I first thought. Was confused by the apparent emplacement of such permanent markers on something that 'wood' rot away. Trying to work out some interpretation for the pattern detail. It's not binary, could be family markers on the end of the wavy lines - bigguns for adults & the smaller dots for kiddies or maybe just stylised flower spikes on wavy stalks. The mystery of art huh.
