Processed through Google Nik filters, Vikas.  For the Schindler's Factory, I had to correct the building alignment in Lightroom, before using Google Nik (Viveza) as there was some really strong sun blowing out highlights. For the "Empty Chairs", I processed it through Viveza, which does really nicely with tones and shadows. On the Paris Night Life, I think I'd used the sunshine filter and skylight filters in Color Efex before converting the color to a silver tone in Apple.

Very effective.

Our Poland trip was terrific - it was quite a pleasant surprise. Auschwitz was disturbing to say the least, though not unexpected; it has always been on my bucket list.

Paris, of course, needs no recommendation.

Yes, Starbucks in Paris was quite "glamorous"!  So very French. :)

Thanks for your compliments.

Your Auschwitz photographs are a remarkable achievement. To me they reflect a certain 'stillness' now all of that activity has passed. Ten at the time of liberation I didn't see the newspaper images (withheld by my parents!) bar one showing a building where inmates had been burned alive – an arm could be seen under the door. It's an image I have never forgotten.

Microview:

Thank you for your thoughts.

In some respects, the serenity of Auschwitz 1 disturbed me, from the standpoint that it was such a startling contrast to the evil that took taken place '24/7'.  It 'white washes' the past, if that makes sense?

I'm still trying to come to terms with the "how it could happen" - from the standpoint of the individual actors, to that of a whole nation-state having been complicit.

Regards,

Rob

"how it could happen", 3 generations ago? A lot of historical experts already tried to explain it. But it is history!

How it could happen nowadays? Just have a closer look at Turkey. They still deny the genocide of the Armenians,

and their present "leader" is on the best way to ...

Anyhow, this is a forum / board about photography and not about politics.

Ralle111,

Yes, you are absolutely correct. My apologies to the extent your sensibilities were upset by the commentary.

At the risk of offending your sensibilities further, I'll not comment on your comment about the Turks and Armenians.

I hope you can erase from consideration, or disregard, any emotional or political comments that you may have read regarding Auschwitz.

Nonetheless, photographs in historical context can evoke emotions, and to many who have commented, that is what they are saying in so many words, as a critique of the photographs. Also, while Auschwitz may be as you say 'history', nonetheless, we should never forget what the capacity of man for evil is and photographs can keep alive that which we might otherwise let fade from consciousness. I would hope that my photos can help continue that consciousness.

Copernicus statue in medieval town of Turon, Poland, where he was born in 1473.

Copernicus formulated the radical notion that our solar system resolved around the sun rather than the Earth.
