M10R with reissued 50mm Noctilux.  When stopped down (this photo at f8) the lens is as sharp as my 50mm APO.  In fact, I'm beginning to wonder is I really need the APO!

my observations are similar, when i got the 50APO and stopped down to F4 and further, the sharpness was exactly as my noctF1 V4, tested on my M10M, maybe results will vary on the M11 soon.

@T25UFO  @overexposed

Latest Leica lenses and especially the Apo versions are meant to be used with their fastest aperture. And that's exactly where they shine.

Like Peter Karbe, Head of Leica’s Optical Development Department, himself said: "Stop down for what?" Being sharper stopped down was never a challenge for lenses.

If you want to get deeper into optics, Leica Camera Australia has two very interesting interviews on YouTube with Peter Karbe, one about M lenses and one about SL-lenses.

Agree . . . but the photo I posted was taken with the reissued 50mm Noctilux, which is soft wide open and sharp when stopped down.  I was just observing that when this lens is stopped down it is as sharp as the 50mm APO at a similar aperture.  Of course, the APO would be much sharper across the whole frame at f2.0, but you can't get the Noctilux look with the APO.

Thank you for including the YouTube link.  I will take a look 🙂

You’re welcome! – Ok, I see. The reissued Noctilux is of course a different thing since it’s based on the old optics calculation to provide the classic feel (wide open) aka known as "Leica glow". 😁

this thing will always be talked about, i read interesting comment from my friend @derleicaman in one of the FB leica group about why lens might be stopped down despite of what his friend has to say

dont get me wrong, i almost always shoot widest open with all my 50's it just getting interesting

🙂

That's precisely why I sold mine after having it only two months. I buy a lens like that to use wide open. I'm much happier with the 50 APO at f/2 than I was with the f/1.2 Noctilux wide open. But, different strokes...
