Respectfully have to disagree. The breadth of drawing styles offered across 8 decades of M lens production is, at least from some, the greatest attraction of the system to begin with. There's a reason other than price and profit motive as to why Leica currently produces five 50mm lenses, why they're about to add a 35mm APO to the line, have reincarnated a series of vintage designs, etc.  At smaller aperture, in shadow, not to mention 8 bit jpegs crushed to web resolution, the differences might be more subtle, but even in your example, ignoring what I take to be differing focus points and apertures, my eye notes visible differences in contrast.

Well it was late on a winter day and the photographs were taken about half an hour apart with the sun rapidly changing its angle and thus the illumination of the subject. At the time I was not trying to do a test. I agree with you, the 8 bit jpegs are a problem for making any kind of rigorous comparison.

I know that there are fans of the retro lens “looks”. That isn’t my cup of tea. Lens design has improved over the decades and I like to take advantage of those improvements.

I always find your photographs interesting.

Great Falls, Maryland water rescue on a call from Virginia. Leica M10-R 21mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH. f/4, 1/90 sec, ISO 320, EV-.3  The original was really sharp, but this jpeg is not.

How do you mount your graduated ND filters? I use both the Sing Ray and Lee system for my Nikon lenses, but they are really much too large for the Leica M and its lenses.

M10-R + Voigtlander 21 f/1.4 wide open at MFD. Really liking the tonality of the M10-R files converted to b&w in C1.
