Are any of you using TL lenses on your SL/SL2? How do you like them and what are your favorites? Lets see some pics! Thanks.  Mitch

Hi Mitch,

I've owned the SL for 6 weeks and for now the only autofocus lenses I have are the TLs.
I really like the 18-56mm, it's my favorite lens on the T and the CL.

And I just bought the 23mm again because even if it didn't convince me on the T I wanted to give it/me a new chance since the 35mm is a focal length that I appreciate a lot...

I hesitated with the 45mm sigma but since I have the T/CL, I optimized.

I really like the SL and clearly the body is much more pleasant to use than the CL especially with the M lenses.

But when using SL lenses, especially the Zoom 24-90 I don't feel like taking it with me anymore.
So the TL lenses make a lot of sense in my opinion... For an amateur use.

I don't crop much and the 10 megapixels are enough for a web use.
With these 2 lenses the Sl remains very compact.

The image quality of the 23mm is very good.
The 23mm is close to the 35mm summicron M.
The 18-56 zoom is very light and the quality is decent. But it needs light!

A Sl2 would have been even better, but it's not in  my budget!

I’m interested in getting feedback from SL2 users 🙂

SL2 in APS mode delivers 20mp, pretty much. Sometimes I prefer the small TL18-56: On a sightseeing walk, family meeting, ... The results are absolut ok

I don’t really see the sense of using TL lenses on an SL systematically

I can think of a few reasons ... one body for both sets of lenses.  Lightness and compactness when needed.  20Mp quite usable.  Faster autofocus and general performance with the newer electronics.  Better, later sensor technology.  Image stabilisation built into the body.  And the option of using FF SL lenses when size/weight is not an issue.

I have thought about the possibility a few times.  Maybe a CL2 will negate a lot of these benefits, of course.

Yes - but having an SL2 to use primarily TL lenses is rather counterproductive - better get a CL or TL2 body.

I have a SL2 with the SL24-90, SL50 2.0 and the TL 55-135. I choose the TL 55-135 over the SL90-280 for a few reasons:

1) I still get 20mb photos with the TL lens on the SL2.

2) The TL 55-135 is MUCH easier to travel with.

3) I actually seldom use a telephoto so it it seemed like a better financial decision.

Of course, as good as the TL lens is, I did not expect the same results as the SL lens. That said, in good daylight, the TL 55-135 photos look amazing.

I do like the idea. If the SL 1 I owned had been able to do 20 MPix-Pics with TL-lenses I wouldn´t have sold it. 20 MPix are enough for most situations and a 11-23 lens in FF would be much to big and heavy, I wouldn`t carry it on trips. The small 11-23 TL would be my first choice.

I use several of my TL lenses on the SL2, as Dirk states above, 20MP is more than enough in most situations.

  • 1 year later...

Using TL lenses on the SL for anything other than very occasional use seems like the worst of both worlds. Used on the TL2 or CL you’ll get the same FOV but will get the full 24MP sensor resolution and a much smaller and lighter body.

Funny thing, if I were still shooting with an SL then I would be more drawn towards using the lighter Sigma lenses as they are FF, lighter, smaller than their Leica eq' even though many understand the IQ is not as good for chimping or high end work (I have personally used Sigma for pro work without issue).

The bottom line is to do what makes you happy and enjoy life to the best you can but the CL was designed to be a nice compact system with a big punch, especially with M lenses, surely we all remember the cries of "we want a mini M". I thought the CL delivered very well on that. TL lenses were designed to be used with the CL/TL and, although can be used on an SL/SL2 in 'crop' mode, personally I think you'd be better suited using a CL, it's even smaller than the SL in crop mode, it has a higher pixel count than an SL in crop mode too.

I totally get it that the SL with native SL lenses is a BEAST! that's why i got rid of mine. The most fun I had with mine was with M lenses, AMAZING! but for that AF buzz you are going to suffer either, heavy kit or crop mode unless you opt for the lighter options available.

At the end of the day it's all about producing an image you are happy with and to do this we sometimes need to experiment and try different things.

Have fun.

Hi,

TL 23 : 34,5mm and TL 35 : 52,5 mm

with the Sl and sl2-s : 10 mpix

with the sl2 : 20 mpix

I really like the size and iq of the 23mm with the SL

 Cheers

Greetings!

My question was - " What is the focal length of a TL 23mm lens if used on a SL/SL2 body"??

Or "what will be the focal length of a TL 35mm lens when being put on a SL/SL2 body??

(TL 23 : 34,5mm and TL 35 : 52,5 mm) is for the effective focal length on the CL/TL bodies, but how about on a SL body??

It’s the same on both because the TL lenses are designed to cover the smaller area of an APS-C sensor.  When mounted to an SL body the camera is forced into crop mode with the same 1.5x crop factor.
