Best Leica Dealers Online? Negotiations? Markup?

Hi all,

Well, I thought I had a deal on a used Leica M10 monochrom, but it fell through.

However, after days of research and getting excited about it...well, I still want one.

I'm new to the forum, but with all the great responses I got from the lens forum, I thought ya'll might could help me shopping.

I still want that camera.

Who would ya'll recommend to buy online? I live in the New Orleans area and there's not an official Leica dealer anywhere near me, so, I'll need to buy sight unseen.

(I've never even yet touched a Leica camera).

Also, is there any negotiations on new gear or even used/demo gear at places?  If so, any idea a good % off MSRP to ask for? What would be a realistic offer to give based on whatever markup for Leica gear is?

For instance, on the M10 Monochrom, which is new...it is $8295 MSRP.

What would a good offer for a new or a used/demo model be?

I hope I'm in the correct room for this type question.

Thank you all in advance!

For brand new, I usually buy from price.com.hk (many choices, see their rating). or b&h. Adorama is equally good as b&h. price.com.hk usually has brand new Leica or Hasselblad items with the price about 60~80% of  B&H, but not always. Some items can be more expensive, for example, Hasselblad XCD 45mm F4P is HK$ 11000 while it is only US$1099 in US (any authorized store). So checking both prcie before you go.

For used, I like Leica SF, B&H, Adorama, and KEH. Leica SF is a branch of Camera West, but Camera West sells other brands too.  My personal experiences, KEH usually has used items with lower price, but when the price are about the same, the first three stores usually have better quality.

Thank you for the feedback.

LOL, I went to the HK site and guessed they had a switch to Language for English, I finally found it.

New M10 Mono price appears to range from USD $7,314.3-7,790.8

I've not seen what shipping would be.

A couple questions tho...how trustworthy is it buying off one of these sites?

IN shipping to the US, do customs add foreign tariff taxes to it at port I wonder?

Given that the HK has those prices for new M10 Mono, would those be reasonable to offer to the US sites?

Any thoughts on this site I found, Classic Connection in CT?

What about PopFlash Photo in CA?

Again, thank you for the feedback.

I'm just guessing folks here don't always pay MSRP for Leica (I've seen people compare them to Porsches, and well, you don't pay MSRP on a Porsche usually)....so,wondering what good prices to offer are on new and used gear, if there is a % of MSRP that would give you a good deal and let dealer still retain enough of their markup.

Thank you in advance!!

Dealers have different standards and requirements for selling used Leica gear.  At Leica Miami, for instance, one might pay more, but they generally send used gear to Leica or DAG (a trustworthy third party Leica repair specialist) before sale to ensure optimal working order, and then offer commensurate warranty (store and/or Leica). One can always be assured that an M9-based camera will never be sold without a non-corroding sensor, or an S lens without the current AF motor, etc. Chasing the lowest price can be a fool’s game.

New Leica gear is supposed to be sold and advertised at list price.  Some dealers have ways of discounting gear by offering mint demo or similar, but buyer beware; one needs to be savvy, and careful, in choosing dealers and ‘deals’. Anyone who has a tight dealer relationship might have to shoot you after confiding. 😳

Some stores don't ship. You have arrange the shipping yourself (have a friend over there?) or find the store that does ship, (then won't be the low low price, but still pretty compelling.

Most stores I dealt with are 5 stars. I trust them no less than B&H. The first few times I bought from them I had the phone ready to connect to Leica Germany. After I paid, I opened the camera (or lens) immediately and registered to the Leica official site. I was suggested by Leica service at N.J, that if I could register it, there is no need to worry.

I actually heard before the first buying that if it has lower price,  indicates that is from the low grade batch supposed to sold in some low income countries (Africa, South America). I checked that message with Leica N.J, Leica told me "Leica has only one grade over the whole world." The Leica rep also joked: " We don't have enough volume for that practice!".  This low price/low grade batch story has been told on Canon, Nikon, too. Not sure I can apply the same argument, though.

The other concern is about the warranty. Leica told me all new Leica items carry the same world wide warranty. If there is problem, you can send to any authorized Leica dealer or just send (Leica N.J if you are in US) by yourself. It doesn't matter whether it's grey market item or not. Though you might get extra service if you paid non-grey market price.

It used to be no taxes, but since Trump taxes Germany goods, not sure how it works now.

It's still a mystery to me how HK get such low price. In fact, my friends in Moscow told me Leica in Russia also has good price. That turned down my belief that B&H has the world's best price.     So, you figure it out.

No experience with those stores. I think the general belief is, B&H and Adorama are either the best or two of the best priced in US.

This is not true, I can get good group discount price from B&H  than the normal price you saw. For example, see the attachment I just grabbed from B&H.

The bundle?  Hardly what I meant.

In any case, sounds like an approved arrangement. If so, again different.

It is irrelevant to OP’s question

The point is where to find good priced online store. And there are lots of good reputations stores with much better price, Hong Kong has many.

I’m referring only to US dealers.  I stick with them and suggest that the OP does the same. PopFlash is a good place to start, given his goals. You can speak for yourself.

I've dealt exclusively with Poplash.  Five bodies and numerous lenses.  Some new, more used/demo.  When my Monochrom went to New Jersey for sensor replacement and Leica NJ quit responding to me, Tony stepped in and got my camera back for me.  Great folk and fair pricing.

Usually your local dealer has the best service.
If this is your priority, buy local, support your local business.
