how much would one pay for such lens? Seems to be the perfect travel and day to day lens. Too bad leica is not productionising this prototype.

Looks like a very interesting lens which was designed in more recent times compared to the MATE and to a lesser degree the WATE. What's also interesting is the engraving "Designed by Leica Camera Germany Manufactured in Japan". I wonder who made it,  given the complexity of such a design (though Konica Hexanon has a lovely 21-35mm). Which company makes the Leica TL lenses?

I vaguely recall leicarumors posting something about potentially new MATE-esque zoom lenses. What other prototypes are lurking! A thread on "practical dream lenses" would give Leica plenty of ideas (practical in that it can't be a 21-90mm f2). I'm sure there's such a thread somewhere in this forum.

Regarding a production version of this lens, I'd think it'd cost anything from $6500 to $8000USD. Unless of course producing it elsewhere aside from Germany would reduce cost a little.

It looks interesting, but is only for collectors. It looks as if it is not easy to look through the finder if it sits on the camera. So I am not too sad, that they did not put it into production.

I could imagine that the “regular” price is maybe 10000 or even more. As the numbers they could sell would probably not be too large. (It is not very elegant if you compare it e.g. with a 2.8/90mm.) Too sad they do not display the lens scheme. That could be interesting (especially how they handle the selection of the right frame).

"real" zoom (so not "quad" but "vario" ... 😎)  but aperture variable with focal... I suspect this  is another reason fro they didn't go on with it... anyway I do remember when  this pic appeared some years ago (don't remember where downloaded from... maybe Leicarumors...) Just ONE s/n apart from the auctioned item...

Hello,

thank you very much for the hint to  the short description with pictures!
In the meantime I have used optical components that are available since the 60s. The 4th position is the APO-Extender-M for me. (;-)

Some of us would like to see Leica revising and extending the Tri-Elmar concept - ...  very useful for hiking and travelling.  { WATE & MATE }

" Whether the new Vario-Elmar-M will go into series production is not yet clear ( *... ). ""

With the introduction of system cameras with 'real-time image display' and electronic viewfinder, the proven Visoflex housing with M bayonet can be omitted if required.

The use of E. Leitz Visoflex components is a weight-, volume- and cost-optimized alternative:

I recall this, at the time picture was floated on the web it was reputed the lens belonged to Dr Rohde, the Electronics expert who was involved n evaluating M240 prototype, also personal buddy of Dr Kaufmann.  Rohde-Schwarz is multinational business specialising in electronics and telecommunication testing equipment.

Yes ! Thanks for remembering... now I also remember that some pictures taken with it (rather trivial, honestly...) were floated, too...

Luigi, I remember seeing the same post and pictures a few years ago. I think it was Leica Rumors

Then picked up by Leica Rumors and updated as X vario zoom lens, not a quad M lens...
