An ecstatic Johannesburg "car guard" finally back at work, as South Africa emerges from one of the hardest lockdowns imposed anywhere. These guys have no formal employment other than hanging around parking lots & restaurant areas, directing traffic, minding & washing people's cars. Their livelihood depends solely on the generosity of patrons. With restaurants, nightclubs etc. closed up until a few weeks ago, Julian told me that he'd not had any income for the past 5 months.
