Advertisement Posted August 14, 2006 Posted August 14, 2006 Hi marknorton, Take a look here R8/DMR woes on the way to being sorted. Great service from MK - again. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Overgaard Posted August 14, 2006 Share #42 Posted August 14, 2006 Seems we are all guesssing. Some of the R8 had trouble with the winder/motor and that had to be fixed at Solms as it was an electronics question. Mine had that fixed whatever it was. It ran for a while without problems. Then suddently stopped working. Some users could clean their contacts and other stuff and that handled their problem (which was not the electronics). As far as I remember, the same issue with winder is the issue with the DMR. And thus the reason it has nothing to do with serial number. I would sleeep on it, call Solms tomorrow and ship the damn thing (and have the dealer do the same so the two units meet up in Solms). And ask them to get it back this weekend. Annoying. Life sometimes is.

rick_dykstra Posted August 15, 2006 Share #44 Posted August 15, 2006 I am sure a lot of R8 owners, which constitute a vast majority of the combined R8+R9 opwners are hesitant to buy the DMR given the uncertain prospect of getting it to work on their R8, Cheers, Tim You're dead right about that. However, I still think the DMR is one heck of an achievement, keeping the Leica compatibility chain intact.
telyt Posted August 15, 2006 Share #45 Posted August 15, 2006 Sorry to hear of your problems Andy. FWIW, I bought my demo DMR sight un-seen, put in on my R8 (flat contacts, s/n 2775xxx) and it has worked well with no significant problems other than those managed by the gray matter behind the viewfinder. I tried the same DMR on a second R8 and it worked perfectly.
wizard Posted August 15, 2006 Share #46 Posted August 15, 2006 Do R9s have round tops to the gold pegs in the camera body? My R8 pegs are flat. Just checked with my R9: The contacts are flat, too, but have a tiny depression in the center of each contact that I fail to see in your picture showing the contacts of your R8. robert_parker Posted August 15, 2006 Share #47 Posted August 15, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Andy I haven't done the maths but there are deals out there where you can trade in the R8 for a £700 discount on an R9 + DMR - would that solve matters ? masjah Posted August 15, 2006 Share #48 Posted August 15, 2006 Or maybe, buy an old heap of an SLR (it just has to be working I think, under the terms of the offer) for £100 or less, and then sell the R8 separately for whatever. Maybe that could get you even closer to the cost of the R9 part of the bundle?
andybarton Posted August 17, 2006 Author Share #49 Posted August 17, 2006 Just had a call back from MK (they have found this new forum, btw, as have Solms technicians ) and they had done the research into the issue before I phoned them yesterday. What a great bunch down there. Any R8 that goes back for any service item to Solms is automatically checked and upgraded as necessary so that it is "DMR compatible". So, that leaves me with two scenarios. 1. The back is faulty (unlikely) 2. The dealer didn't fit it quite correctly (a possibility) or 3. The camera and the back just need to be matched (as was suggested above) (OK, that's three scenarios) Dilema: Having decided I would wait in indeterminant amount of time for an R10... I am now back into "Maybe this DMR" mode. I used to be indecisive - now I am not so sure
masjah Posted August 17, 2006 Share #50 Posted August 17, 2006 Andy That is good news. I think that if you'd got a good deal on the DMR, I'd be tempted to go for it, and get the two matched-up!
stuny Posted August 17, 2006 Share #51 Posted August 17, 2006 Andy - You've seen the results on htis forum of DMR shooting, and you've read the enthusiasm we have for the rig. See if it will work, but don't forget the issue of clean contacts.
graeme_clarke Posted August 17, 2006 Share #52 Posted August 17, 2006 Hi Andy, When I first fitted my DMR to an R9 it didn't work! After cleaning all the contacts carefully, then hinging the back onto the body, I pushed the base unit on and seated it tightly by hand, then gripping the base and body to hold them together, I then tightend the screw. It worked. I've only had it apart twice since to clean the sensor and fitting it together this way has maintained all the contacts. As others have said, you have to make sure all the contacts are realy clean, and that all the pins sit tightly on their seats. Is it make your mind up time yet? Best wishes, Graeme
marknorton Posted August 17, 2006 Share #53 Posted August 17, 2006 ...they have found this new forum, btw, as have Solms technicians.../quote] So they now know there's this idiot who posts pictures of the back of his lenses and takes his D2 apart... Back to the DMR, if the price is attrractive, I'd be tempted to go for it, knowing that it's unlikely to be a major issue. You could always plan that trip to Solms again... dhsimmonds Posted August 17, 2006 Share #54 Posted August 17, 2006 My brand new DMR fitted to a brand new R9 locked up on me half way through a shoot this week. An Error 02 message came up on the LCD screen and camera/back became unusable. I removed the battery and replaced it after a few minutes which seemed to restore things and the camera seemed to be capturing images until I noticed that the Instant Review...wasn't! I did a play back and all my images captured until the time of the Error message was there on the card but nothing after that.....the DMR had failed. An email to Leica and my Leica dealer from whom I purchased the R9/DMR was immediately responded with the information that Error Message 02 is caused by a minor electronic component failure and the unit needed to be returned to Solms in Gemany for repair. I had only taken a total of 74 images, the DMR failed on the 75th just as I was getting to enjoy using this camera! Leica Camera Ltd in the UK have been brilliant, arranging collection of the DMR from my home and promising a loan DMR back until mine is returned from Solms. Has anyone else had this problem I wonder? Cheers, Dave

topoxforddoc Posted August 17, 2006 Share #57 Posted August 17, 2006 I got great service from Leica MK when my R9 and DMR didn't work properly. Sadly didn't get loan DMR last december. However I don't think I would be without it now. Charlie
