CL + Lumix & Sigma. What’s working, what’s not ?

Just few questions for owners of CL and Sigma DC DN or DG DN lenses and Panasonic Lumix S ones.

Functionalities wise what’s working and what’s not when mounted on CL with FW 4.0 ?

- AF. Anything relevant about it.
- OIS switch.  Do mode 1 or 2 really change optical stabilisation behaviour ?
- AFL button. Customisable or non functioning ?
- Focus limiter switch.
- Manual focus clutch.
- AF/MF switch.
- Manual focusing retouch when shutter released half pressed. Like with TL/SL lenses.
- Automatic software correction : embedded into DNG ? Compulsory or optional ?
- Manual focusing ring turn speed for videos. (Lumix S) Customisable with CL ?

Thanks for you insight. I am really thinking about buying Sigma lenses for my CL. But I just want to know what is the state of the L-mount alliance with the CL FW 4.0.

I only have the 100-400. The sole thing not working is the Focus Lock button on the lens - which is a useless appendage anyway.

I found that the OIS affects AF accuracy negatively (albeit only slightly so) when pushed to the limit. When used "normally" this does not occur.

It is unfortunate.
I’d like the idea to get an extra button on the lens. CL is kind of one button short.

Sigma AFL button on the lens can be customised with Sony bodies.

Leica, please update the CL again. We should be able to use every single functionality of any L-mount alliance lens.

What do you think about this combination ?
I am hesitant between 56mm DC DN & 85mm DG DN for the CL.

Is 85mm too front heavy for the CL ?
Is distortion too noticeable?
Any other quirks ?
How is IQ ?

It is unclear whether the non-functional button is caused by the camera or by the lens firmware or is a hardware mismatch.

But does AFL button worked with SL or SL2 ?

What’s funny is how Panasonic and Sigma’s L-mount lenses are featured packed.
Whereas Leica SL/TL lenses are so bare-bone :
- No aperture ring.  (Body dial controlled)
- No focus limiter switch. (Menu only)
- No OIS switch. (Menu only)
- No AFL button.
- No aperture unclick switch or screw.
- No manual focus clutch. (Shutter released half pressed for manual focusing retouch)
- No focusing distance and/or magnification scale  (SL/SL2 top screen or T/TL/TL2 on screen digital scale)

The lens is indeed a little heavy on the light CL.

However, because i use Noct + CL sometimes, such counterweight is still ok to me.

For IQ part, i have some photos for the combo in my flickr album.

Thank you for your pictures

I am very interested in this lens. Does the focus limiter work with this lens? Is the autofocus reliable on your CL ?

So far, for me, the best lens in the Sigma L mount is the 14-24mm stunning on the S1R and a very useful 21-35 (approx) on the CL no issues at all on either.

The 16/30/56 trio are designed for crop bodies and work very well on the `CL but also really really nice on the S1R in crop mode.

The 100-400, to me, needs great effort to get it to work properly with the CL however I have had great results with the S1R

Another GEM is the Sigma 45mm on either body but my preference is the S1R.

I think that the effort needed to get a long lens to work properly  on a light body depends on the experience one has in the field with such combos. I found it not more difficult than for instance the 105-280 Vario Elmar R on the CL. The SL(2) is obviously easier as the body balances the lens more effectively. On the CL the handgrip and thumb-rest are essential in my experience and I like to use a Rowi chest/shoulder pod. For difficulty try using a Noflexar 400 or 560 / PIGRIFF on an M8 with Visoflex 3.

Do you have a picture of the combo CL + 14-24mm

I am also wondering if it can be a nice fast wide angle zoom for my CL.
I don’t need/like wider than 21mm. But I am an absolute fan of fast 21mm. So f/2.8 is very appealing.
I am just afraid of size and weight.

I am really thinking to adopt Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 + 85mm f/1.4 DG DN / Art for my CL. They could be complimentary to my Q2. One giving me the beloved 21mm and the other a kind of 135mm that I liked too.

Have to admit I have no issues using the Leica-R 80-200 with the CL works better because, as you say, it's about the balance. I'm happy to stick with the 100-400 on the S1R and keep the 80-200 on the CL

Takes a lot of experience to handle unbalanced combinations, especially for a guy like me who rarely shoots over 90mm
