Quick stupid question: what is the purpose of an infinity lock ? What does it do ?

From a 'pro' perspective: it allows the lens to be locked at infinity during transport or other shipping.

From an 'anti' perspective: it continually gets in the way when focussing from infinity as you briefly wonder why you can't focus, remember, take the lock off, and then grit your teeth because you've missed the shot of the day.

You might detect from what I've written that I don't like infinity locks.

Pete.

I've owned a couple of lenses with infinity locks but most without. You get used to it if they are fitted, but I never found them to have any 'use' as such. As Leica dropped the idea, I'm probably far from alone in this😉.

No, it's not that one.

Why are you convinced that it's a goggles lens?

It's a non goggles, standard M mount production lens, one of a small batch of v2 lenses that had infinity lock.

Ernst

I am not convinced of anything. It's just that i have no evidence of such a batch so i simply ask.

1. for a safety lock during mounting or dis-mounting your lens

2. on the collapse lenses(before 90'), infinity locked could be a safety mechanism for locking the focus helicoid prior collapse and extend your lens

You do have evidence. I've shown you a photo, as has @shirubadanieru. I have the lens in my hand as I write this.

Ernst

Similar lenses have been butchered in the past so such evidences are not quite convincing to me but don't take it personally please it's stronger than me. Ugly lawyer here :D

😆I am not quite sure that is not a sexual lens harassment.

Unbutchered, until proven otherwise.

Thanks.

The late Pico from here had 2 copies of the v2 infinity lock, with serial numbers close to mine. He bought his new and presumably didn't resort to sawing off the goggles...

Ernst

The lens was made in several versions. Both black and silver and with variants called M3 with goggles.
