Popular Post RobM Posted August 8, 2020 Popular Post Share #1 Posted August 8, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been shooting b&w for many years, either as film or with the Leica M9 Monochrom. Last week I traded my M-A for the TL2 plus the 11 - 23 lens. I thought the TL2 would complement the Monochrom well, and might tempt me into exploring colour. The trade was done through Red Dot Cameras in London. At first I was a little disappointed, in that the TL2 is much lighter than the Monochrom, and I missed a bit of the heft of that camera. But after being out for a couple of hours this morning, I quickly became adapted to the weight of the TL2. I'd spent an hour the previous evening getting used to the menu system, and now have everything I usually need within easy reach. The screen is magnificent, but I might well invest in the EVF at some future point. It has been a very sunny day here in Edinburgh, and I couldn't always see the screen as clearly as I would have liked to, occasionally shooting and hoping! But all worked out well, as I had hoped. The 11 - 23 zoom lens seems to be of a very high quality, as we have come to expect from Leica, and mercifully cheaper than the M range. I might get the R adapter, and invest in one or two of those excellent lenses. I shot wide and very wide angles, and knew in advance that I would be cropping some of them. Opening the files in LR6, I soon saw that this was very possible, as the image quality seemed very high. So, overall I am delighted with the camera and lens, and hope to do some serious work with them. I decided to take on colour. For someone who is devoted to b&w, this is a Big Thing, and I was actually nervous about it. I decided that if were to shoot colour, I would not do colour versions of my usual imagery, but do shots ABOUT colour, to help me understand it. Well, I'm really pleased with the results, and look forward to engaging with it more. It was a BIG decision to trade in the excellent M-A, but it looks to have been a decision I can live with. I'm happy with my IIIG for film shots. The first two are self explanatory, but the other three are close ups of a metal sculpture in the grounds of the Modern Art Gallery, Edinburgh. bcorton Posted August 8, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 8, 2020 Rob, Excellent COLOR images. I love the subtleties and the textures. Really lovely work. I was trained as a painter. One of my mentors was a young German fellow, and an artistic genius. Most artists at the end of their careers would be glad to have the talent and skill he demonstrated in his early twenties. However, he would not allow himself to work in color until he felt he had mastered black and white. I believe he was in his 40s before he began to dabble in color. He needn't have waited. His first color work was astonishing. Do you see what I'm (unsubtly 😉 ) getting at? Embrace it -- you obviously get it.
RobM Posted August 8, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted August 8, 2020 Ha, thanks. You're saying "You put the "you" (U) in colour"! I've done a little colour work before, but never enjoyed it, but b&w I took to straight away. But I feel the time is now right to explore it. Thanks for the encouragement. RobM Posted August 8, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted August 8, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've cropped the 4th one, which seemed a little unbalanced. Now, I'm not used to printing colour. Any suggestions on what paper to use for this? Gyclée or C-Type? Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted August 9, 2020 Share #8 Posted August 9, 2020 Actually, quite pedestrian Canon paper does rather well for colour prints. If you want to get up to "art" level, have a look at the Canson range.. I could imagine the above image on matte paper and try Canson Baryta - which normally is my go-to B&W paper.
RobM Posted August 9, 2020 Author Share #9 Posted August 9, 2020 Yes, I use Baryta paper for my b&w images, so much so it never crossed my mind it might be good for colour too. Thanks.

tommonego@gmail.com Posted August 10, 2020 Share #12 Posted August 10, 2020 Very nice images! A baryta paper would work well with these. Big step going to color.
