There was a time when we were told that a digital M was impossible.

That is an incomplete quote: "...at the present time " (2004) and of sufficient quality. In fact, the M8 was only APS-H because Leica found it impossible to overcome corner issues, and had to bring out the camera regardless, to avoid going bankrupt; whereas their ambition was to make it 24x36.

Indeed.  And probably too rushed to uncover IR issues.  Leica keeps a lot of things on the ‘back burner’ until the right solution(s) emerge,  for both cameras and lenses... sometimes for decades, as Karbe has explained.  And that was my real point, i.e., technology and circumstances change, and sometimes yield products not possible or expected at present.

Yes, they beta-tested for a few months only, and the testers were told that the colour output was not fully tweaked, so it slipped through the cracks The things that I found more strange were the blobs and "beam-me-up Scotty"  banding. I got my camera a week before relese and picked up on the IR issue the same day when I took a flash photograph of a black cat on a fake tweed blanket (no fair cop - I had been exploring the same issue on a Nikon D70 a few weeks before) - bought a filter the next day, and had the rainbow banding within the week - I was the first user and Sean Rein even used my shot. I cannot imagine how a timing issue and incorrect mass contact even slipped through Alpha-testing. Still, warts and all, the M8 was a fantastic camera that took my photography to a new level.
