mauriziobozzi Posted June 24, 2020 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does it make sense to buy a pre-asph 50mm summilux lens today? Each lens has basic characteristics and, whether you like it or not, a matter of taste ...I like the first version, but, being a lens that has reached 50 years, it seems to me that the value of this lens has an inadequate value.I would like to know what you think ..... Thanks,A greeting
Advertisement Posted June 24, 2020 Posted June 24, 2020 Hi mauriziobozzi, Take a look here summilux pre-asph. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pgk Posted June 25, 2020 Share #2 Posted June 25, 2020 It has matured well, don't think that old designs are not capable of excellent results. Value is about what you are prepared to pay for something.
a.noctilux Posted June 25, 2020 Share #3 Posted June 25, 2020 As we are in Leica R forum, I'm not aware that there is asph. Summilux-R 50mm. Don't you refer to M, like those Summilux-M pre-asph ? or those "II" ?

Don't you refer to M, like those Summilux-M pre-asph ? or those "II" ? You are, strictly speaking, correct, I don't think there has ever been an aspherical 50/1.4 R. The lens was recomputed and a later version was released I think around 1998. Given the standard focal length, and the relatively generous dimensions of the R system, I presume that it simply wasn't necessary to go to the trouble and expense of employing aspherical lens elements in the redesign. I'm sure the OP was simply comparing the earlier with the later version, and it was an understandable slip to refer to the latter as "asph". I use the 135mm Elmarit-R f / 2.8, the summicron 90mm, Elmarit-R f / 2 and the 60mm Elmarit-R macro f / 2.8. adapted on a Nikon d810 and I'm fully satisfied by them, but the Leica optics are in a different league. What I meant to say is that the price difference is excessive between the Summilux and my 90mm, Elmarit-R f / 2 and I want to understand if it truly worth it.I know that brightness makes the difference, but, as I said, the expense may be excessive ...But, the second-hand market rises and falls like nothing ....Is the old 50mm summilux a "leica" must-have, or is it not? For clarity: I'm speaking about these lens: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/50mm_f/1.4_Summilux-R_I Thanks for the attention..... I hope I explained myself!A greeting ! PS: If there is something not clear I'm very sorry! Google Translate does what it can!
pgk Posted June 25, 2020 Share #6 Posted June 25, 2020 (edited) You should be able compare the earlier and later 50 Summilux-R lenses but ll I can find are two product brochures for the versions 2: http://summilux.net/r_system/pdf/50summ_e.pdf & http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/images/5/5b/Summilux-R_50_mm_Technical_Data_en.pdf In the earlier information pdf Leica state: "Leica Camera AG redesigned the SUMMILUX-R f/1.4/50mm and the optical performance of this new lens surpasses that of the previous model considerably." Charles Morgan Posted June 25, 2020 Share #7 Posted June 25, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't have the 50mm Summilux, but I do have the 80mm Summilux R f1.4. I'm not really bothered if there are different versions or how old it is, I do know that it is the last lens in my possession that I would ever sell. Wide open it is beautiful, soft and exquisite, stopped down it is sharp yet not as sharp as an Elmarit or Summicron, but altogether so beautiful that it was worth every single of the many pennies that it cost.
