Keeping My M-E. Sorry, CL.

My beloved M-E is currently in the hospital in Allendale, NJ, for a corroded sensor replacement.
The cost of this, as most of you know, is $1,595 + shipping.

I also had the option to upgrade to the CL (body only) for the same price. The CL offers a host of technological upgrades, better low-light performance, blah, blah, blah. And in full disclosure: I told myself this was the right move to make... that lasted for about an hour.

The thought of being without this instrument which feels so pure and so aligned with my film photography actually made me nauseous.
I passed on the CL.

Here's a pic of "my precious" mounted with the beautiful Canon 50mm f/1.8 (Canon Seranar).
Carry on.

Right thing. CL has no RF at all. I used later 50 1.8 on my M-E and colours very pleasant and not very usual ones.

Missing Chicago, BTW.

With M-E in 2019.

If you like the rangefinder experience and the feel of an M it's hard to beat.  Having recently lost my M10 and 50 Summilux after a river incident, I knew it would take a while for the insurance to get it sorted and having a CL and SL thought I'd be fine.  I wasn't and quickly ended up buying a well used 240 from a friend, daft as it sounds, I felt complete again🙃.

From a long term perspective of trading my M9 with sensor corrosion for an SL you have made the right choice. The other Leica cameras have by design more features, more capability, more menus, more electronics, more options, more time spent fiddling with the camera. The M is a relief and it’s nice to return to simple.

Very nice combination! Recently I have been using my '53 example of the same lens and love it's rendering on the M9M.

Hope you get it back soon!

Perfectly understandable sentimental move.

Leaving the good old friend is indeed very hard, but my experience of trade-up my M9P is a difference. I chose SL and I am extremely happy about the decision. The availability of SL AF and zoom lenses opens a brave new world that M is blocked out. The What you see is what you get EVF is a plus that I used to wave off.

But M is still undepartable. I then also get a CL. It is the M-like mini-SL.

I guess it's all about the way we arrive at our compositions...

  • I haven't owned an auto-focus lens since 2016.
  • To me, nothing feels like a rangefinder.
  • I only shoot primes.

The only other system I shoot is Pentax, because of their relatively easy to find store of phenomenal classic glass.
Coincidentally... one of my favorite film cameras is the Pentax ME-Super.

My next Leica will be a Monochrom.
Until then, I'm rockin' this M-E.

Now, I have an announcement :)
I received an email from Leica this morning:

Dear Leica Customer,

We are happy to inform you that your Leica product is on its way back to
you. You can expect to receive your shipment within a few days.

We appreciate your patience during this process as we carefully
evaluated your equipment to meet the highest standards in the industry.

Weeeeee!

I admire people who can use a single prime lens to get marvelous shots. I can't. I need either multiple primes or a zoom. The fast large aperture Leica M lenses are essentially irreplaceable,  but getting dirts into the camera is intolerable too. To me Leica Zooms are good enough. Owning both M and CL o SL indeed is a solution.

I believe the most important thing is to know what works for us.

There was a time, shortly after began shooting digital, that I owned zooms and such. I just got tired of it. I decided that I couldn't eat the elephant all at once. I couldn't worry about the "what if..?". I paint with the brush (lens and focal length) that's on the camera. I make those photographs and that's that. There's a certain freedom in this for me.

Well...
My M-E returned home yesterday - 6/26.
They received it on the 9th.

Considering that fact the Allendale facility only partially reopened a couple of weeks ago, due to Covid19 restrictions, and that my terribly cool customer service representative, Kathy Carbone, was working from home... I'd say this was an excellent turn-around time.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update: it's been about a week now, and I have to say: the camera really does feel new. For anyone still on the fence about replacing the sensor, which includes a complete CLA, I highly recommended it. Now, I'm sure some of this newness I'm experiencing is purely psychological, but as Maria sang in West Side Story "I feel pretty..."

I think that song was also sung in 'Anger Management' -- same song different feel

Is it possible to set the FN Key in Play mode to something else than permanent DELETE? Am exasperated by accidental deletes of nice shots-- for instance, finger slides off the move left button of the joy stick... ZAP! Aargh.

My main camera is an M240, with a Summicron 35mm ASPH. As a backup, and for those occasions where I want to travel light I have an X2. Lately I’ve been thinking of upgrading the X2, but all options I see are suboptimal:
      • CL + Elmarit TL 18mm: good size and weight, but too wide
      • CL + Summicron-TL 23mm: good weight, slightly too big, more expensive
      • Q2: great lens, crops to 35mm-e, 30MP, APS-C, but heavy, big (almost the same size as the M), even more expensive
      • Q: cheapest option, great lens, but crops to 35mm-e, 15MP, APS-C, heavy and big
I visited the Leica Store in my city to handle the Q2 and the CL. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring a card to examine images in detail later.
I have a couple of questions about the CL:
      1. In the store, after handling the Q2, the shutter noise of the CL seemed very loud, like an M8. How is it in practice?
      2. I’ve read complaints about the top wheels turning inadvertently when they brush against clothing. It must be serious enough if there is an option to block them in software. Is it that bad?
      3. I remember Peter Karbe saying that for APS-C they needed to increase lens performance by 50%  to keep up with full frame lenses. How do M lenses on the CL compare to TL lenses?
      Thanks!

      Hi guys,
I am sure this topic is covered over and over again, but I can't help starting a new thread to help me out in a very difficult decision. It feels like a very difficult decision anyway.
Some background: I have been photographing for the past 15 years, and for a few of those professionally. I have been a strong Nikon fan throughout (sorry for swearing in the church), but have also owned and used a lot of film cameras, such as Mamiya, Hasselblad 2000FCW, Canon and Nikon 35mm film cameras. I would say i am a fairly decent photographer with, maybe, a bigger passion and lust than talent. :)
Two years ago soon my son was born, and I just didn't bring the big cameras with me any longer, and I missed capturing those moments. I stopped all professional photography to make time for family and my day job. I sold all my other cameras, DSLRs and film alike to buy a new, smaller, more handy one. That I actually would bring with me everywhere and take photos. I never bought one, and now I miss I so much. So I started the hunt for the best camera for ME.
I have been googling, foruming all across, and I just don't know how to drill it down any further and decide on the actual camera to buy. One thing I do know is that it is going to be a Leica. I just love Leicas philosophy, the picture quality, the "to the roots" thing, and I have decided once and for all that now is the time for me to finally own a Leica.
I also know that I am on a budget. Coming in at a total of 2000 USD would be ideal - but if course, Leica is not cheap and there are many factors here. So anywhere between 1000-3000 USD is something I look at.
For that money you could buy either a Leica CL kit brand new, Leica TL2 brand new, a used Leica Q, used Leica M9.
I am not a rangefinder guy really, but I really like the concept. However, I will use the camera for many different scenarios such as travel photo, family photo, art works that I do, and just general hobby/art photography.
I don't do any studio work any longer, so that I don't need, I don't do street photography in that sense, and I don't to long tele situation photography like concerts or sports. So basically, I do everyday photography and would like my photos to be nice to have, maybe frame them, and if I find time again start taking art work photos again. But let's focus on travel, everyday life typ photo.
Now - what do you guys think? Where should I place my bets? I guess many of you have tried many of the cameras - which one do you believe I will be happier with?
Thank you so much! I appreciate all and any input!
