Firmware: 2.7.5.0

Camera: M10

Issue: Camera hesitates when shooting in continuous mode. Most noticeable in low speed continuous.

My camera was sent to Germany for a service due to some dust in the rangefinder. When I received the camera back, they had helpfully upgraded the firmware to 2.7.5.0. Since receiving the camera back, I have found that the camera will hesitate when in continuous shooting modes. Usually after the first frame, sometimes before the first frame, and then after every few frames. It doesn't sound "smooth" any more... almost like the camera is freezing up.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Manual exposure (ISO, Shutter) at something right for your lighting conditions, with the shutter speed at say 1/500 or 1/250th (or at least higher than the continuous mode frequency)
  2. Turn off Auto Review
  3. Set the drive mode to Continuous Low
  4. Press and hold the shutter button
  5. Notice that every few frames the camera sounds like it is hesitating

I can replicate this on different memory cards and also with no memory card. Turning on Auto Review can help but every so often you will still get a hesitation.

  • Can anyone else replicate this?
  • Am I safe to downgrade the firmware and if so how far can I downgrade? I think I was on 1.9.4.0 prior to service.

I did report this issue to Leica Mayfair but haven't heard anything yet.

please save the settings and try a factory reset. Because nobody else have this issue it shouldn't be a general problem. Good luck!

I will try that again and update the thread. Did you try my steps to reproduce? I am interested in knowing if anyone has the same issue after following my steps.

Resolution: turn continuous off.

😎😂

I did that on Sunday and then the next time I pressed the shutter I thought it was completely broken when it (correctly) only took one shot 😂

Resolution not accepted 😉

Pretty sure it does version checking and you can't downgrade the firmware.  If you can install earlier firmware it will not hurt anything, but I don't believe that's allowed.

I had never used continuous on my M240 so I just tried it out.  I noticed that with compressed raw, image review on, 25% battery charge, an empty and not very fast SD card (SanDisk Extreme 32gb 90 mp/s) recently formatted outside the camera and then in the camera} the buffer starts to fill up after about 6 images and pauses altogether at about 8.  There's nothing I would consider "smooth" about it.

How many images are you shooting before the camera slows down?

If it does it with NO memory card present, that strikes me as very odd.

My only suggestion would be to do everything you can to eliminate conditions which would slow down buffer clearing.  Do another factory reset and don't change anything except to select the smallest file size, use a properly formatted SD card, completely charged battery, and make sure LV is not on and you are not shooting raw + jpeg.   If that's not it you may need a service center visit.

I have made a video demonstrating the stutter.

My voice-over makes a couple of mistakes, but you should hear the stutter when I have the auto review turned on and the camera in low speed continuous.

I have exact same thing and I thought that was normal since M10 is not so called "high speed camera".

I use SanDisk SDHC Card Extreme PRO SDHC 32GB 95MB/s cards only.

I’ve never found a use for continuous mode on any camera. I like to decide which instant to take.

Off-topic but, for example I never use camera straps but I still would like that my camera would have lugs for strap in case I decide to use them or for example sell my camera.

Valid point. I've had and tried cameras with fast continuous mode, but was always disappointed with the results shooting sports. Went back to single shot and got what I wanted. I don't care if a camera offers that mode, but it must have fast response to shutter trip in single mode.

I thought that issue had been addressed.  When did it occur?

This was old issue with m240. Sorry again for the off-topic, let's rather discuss continuous low mode problem here.

The download instructions list the changes Leica made for 2.7.5.0.

They include changes to the Continuous Shooting function.

Supposedly only when using Live View and High-Speed Continuous (to fix an existing screen-freeze bug) - but any time code gets fiddled with, it can get screwed up or introduce new bugs.

I'm gonna guess Leica messed up something in the shutter sensing, sequencing, or timing logic for regular continuous, and will have to produce yet another bug-fix. It has been known to happen ("waterfall" effect due to a firmware timing/sequencing error on startup/wakeup in the original M8 firmware).

(Or, of course, there is always the possibility of a corrupted install.)

I have nothing against continuous shooting, although I haven't used it much. I do tend to avoid firmware upgrades until they have been out long enough for all the new bugs to be uncovered and fixed. 😱

I have received an update that this issue has been confirmed as a firmware bug by Leica's QA team in Germany.

Thanks for the update. Is there any ETA when this said issue could be fixed by firmware update?

I was curious so I dialed in the same settings on my M10 (same firmware) and did a test.  It acted similarly so it's obvious that, as suggested, it's a firmware issue.  It gave me the opportunity to try out the continuous shooting modes which I had never selected.  Pretty neat, it gives me the opportunity to take many badly composed photos in the amount of time that I normally can only manage one!  :)
