FilmNut Posted May 3, 2020 Share #1  Posted May 3, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello forum.  Does anyone know what serial number started the improved coatings on the rigid summicron?  Having a hard time finding that.  I know I read it somewhere and should have written it down.  I am shopping for one and hope to procure a later sample and want to be an informed buyer.  Not a dual range but the scalloped rigid.  I think it’s referred to as the red scale?   Anyhow thanks.  Great source of information here.
Advertisement Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Hi FilmNut, Take a look here Rigid summicron. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
james.liam Posted May 3, 2020 Share #2  Posted May 3, 2020 They never advertised the timing of these subtle changes. The later the model, the more advanced the coating formula. Just go with that. More important than the coatings is the presence of significant haze that may not be removable. This will impair images far more than a slight change in the coatings. a.noctilux Posted May 3, 2020 Share #3  Posted May 3, 2020 (edited) Welcome FilmNut, as James wrote, the only significant lesser Rigid is when it has haze, not the coating which I didn't know changes over production. I do have some Summicron Rigid ( and some SOMNI/DR) with color reflections difference, but in photo results no difference to talk about. in Wiki, we have some variations of Summicron 5cm  Red scale ? Never aware of this for Summicron, feet scales on silver Rigid have always be in red ( scale ? ). I know that Elmar 3.5/50 LTM this type ( before this one (in LTM and M mount) are referred to "red scale" with the last change in production run.  Edited May 3, 2020 by a.noctilux
