Lumix S-Pro 70-200 f/4 focus motor issues with Leica SL2?

Hi everyone,

The focus motor on my Lumix S-Pro 70-200 f/4 goes nuts - just keeps running - loudly, remains permanently engaged with a loud whirring sound, every time I mount it on my SL2 and start up the camera.  I checked the lens on my SL typ 601 with no issue.

I have tried the following:

• engaging and disengaging the manual focus ring on the lens.

• starting the camera in all focus modes - manual too.

• resetting the camera to factory settings

None of these have solved it.  Is or has anyone out there experienced the same issue with a SL2 and this lens?

Thank you for your insight.

Nick

Hi Nick - just tried mine but on the CL/SL2 only thing I hear (and it's relatively quiet) is image stabilisation motor.  Other than that have you tried switching off pre-focus on the SL2?

Also what firmware is the lens running on?  I know I had to update mine recently.

Thank you "Boojay" for the tip. I was hopeful but this didn't work either.

Sounds to me like the servo motor, be it IOS or focusing, is stuck on "high rev" never finding an end point.

BTW Have also tried switching IOS on/off in all it's possible iterations.

Do I write this off as a defective lens?

Oh dear, that's annoying.  I was pretty hopeful firmware 1:1 for the lens may have solved it.  I previously had issues with the pre-focus setting on the SL2 and a sigma L mount lens that sounded similar too.  Sure you will have tried mounting and re-mounting the lens.  Hard to be sure it's a lens issue when you say it works fine on the SL1.

Hopefully someone else will make a suggestion that fixes it for you.

In AF setup, Have you tried to turn pre-focus off?

Yes.

I have tried to

1. Switch into manual mode

2. Turn pre-focus off

3. turn O.I.S off on lens

4. turn off image stabilisation of in camera

it stayed quite for a short while today but came back when i zoomed in.

please see attached video with the horrible sound: https://www.dropbox.com/s/l85e12c6b9l3yeo/Video 2020-11-19%2C 07 32 02.mov?dl=0

is this what you also experienced in terms of sound?

what shall I do?

Thanks for sharing your insights!

I watched video. No, I never experience anything like that.

Put the camera in AF-S (or manual focus) aiming a well defined focus target under very good day light, see if it is still happen. Just want confirm it is not pre AF thing that camera want focus itself.

I can only suggest clean the contact of both lens and cameras.

may you also check if this only happen with this particular AF lens but not other AF ones. This can help you isolate with problems happened from lens or camera.

Seems to be something wrong with the lens. Sending to a peace center now. Fingers crossed for a fast fix.

Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

I discovered the culprit - a TINY spider somehow managed to find its way into the lens, I have no idea how, as I keep my lenses in a special dry drawer and had only used the lens 3x in controlled environments.

I sent it to Calumet (where I purchased the lens) and they serviced/repaired and fixed the issue for free, extending the warranty for a year :-)

Check for tiny, I mean very tiny bugs, might be the issue.

Hope you all stay safe and healthy.
