tom24 Posted April 5, 2020 Share #1 Posted April 5, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I have a MacBook pro 15 retina (2017) and an external Eizo CG277 monitor (27 "). What do you recommend when using an external monitor with MacBook pro - should the MacBook lid be opened or closed (due to the need for cooling)? Does it need to be open? Can an open lid play an essential role in cooling? Use for photo editing - Lightroom, Photoshop. Your opinion? Thank you. Stay healthy and with best wishes,

Exodies Posted April 5, 2020 Share #2 Posted April 5, 2020 I would search the net for information on Mac book overheating with external monitor.
LocalHero1953 Posted April 5, 2020 Share #3 Posted April 5, 2020 I can't answer for the Macbook, but my Surface Book 2 gets very hot when I run Adobe LR with the lid down, so I leave it open. The cooling fan runs less.
prk60091 Posted April 5, 2020 Share #4 Posted April 5, 2020 It is called clamshell mode. You need to use an external Keyboard & mouse/trackpad and it is not dangerous it may cause your fans to turn on. I have been running my mbp like this 8-10 hours a day for a year. To preserve the battery use it w/o being plugged in for about 2 hours a day.
