wolan Posted March 29, 2020 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I am new to the Leica world and actually, I am planning to buy an M10 but I need to understand a few things before going ahead. Please do not bash me if I ask stupid questions. I own a Nikon Z7 and the dust on the sensor is a serious problem. I cannot remember a single shooting where I had a picture with a sky free of dust spots. This is in part also due to the fact that I oft change lens (I use a lot vintage lenses). Now, I have heard that the M10s use lock mechanism, so that when you shut down the camera it closes the shutter, so that no dust ends up on the sensor when you remove or change the lens. That is also means that to clean the sensor one must explicitly open the shutter for cleaning from the menu. A couple of questions. - Is my statement above correct? It is true across all M10 models? - Can you otherwise describe how oft you need to clean the sensor? Thank you. Advertisement Posted March 29, 2020 Posted March 29, 2020 Hi wolan, Take a look here How serious is the problem of dust on the sensor with the Leica M10 vs Nikon Z. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 29, 2020 Share #2 Posted March 29, 2020 Dust is not really a problem; it is easily removed. The frequency of cleaning depends on the use (discipline in changing lenses, dusty environment or not) and the visibility of dust depends on aperture and focal length. On M cameras I would guess that the average user will blow the dust out with a rocket blower from time to time and do a sensor clean (see the M FAQ in the M240 forum) maybe once a year or so. Wet cleaning is only needed for sticky dirt like Pollen or grease or to remove haze after multi-year use. It is basically DIY, but cleaning services are available for the nervous. M cameras have no automatic sensor shake. I have no idea about the Nikon Z.
AndreasG Posted March 29, 2020 Share #3 Posted March 29, 2020 I change lenses frequently, so I need to remove dust with a blower around every 2-4 weeks. No wet cleaning yet required after 4.500 shots with my m10-D which I got early 2019. Since the shutter of the M10-D is usually closed - no display - the sensor is slightly better protected, but in principle, for all digital M cameras dust and its removal is no issue and should not influence your buying decision. 1
