I'm considering 'playing around' with longer focal lengths on my M10 and M-P 240 and wondered whether as a 'low cost' experiment Nikon ai or Olympus OM zoom lenses (e.g 80-200mm), would work using LV, assuming adapters are available i.e Novoflex?    I could consider R lenses but they seem to be heavy and unwieldy compared to other brands.

Has anyone used these or other non-Leica lenses?

Thanks for this. I'm probably going to look for an Nikon ai manual lens which will have aperture control. Just checking Novoflex they don't do an Olympus to M adapter so presumably OM lenses aren't compatible; Canon is another option.

Large choices of x to M adapters Fotodiox

For EVF/LV use, I have some Fotodiox adapters for Contax, Nikon, Olympus mounts to use sometimes with my Leica Ms.

Brilliant; you're always so helpful.  I can get these on Amazon UK and they look a reasonable price.  What Nikon/Olympus lenses have you used on your M and how well did they work with LV.  I'm thinking of 80-200mm range

Sorry, I can't help for zooms (I have some very good zoom/vario but too heavy to carry around like this Angenieux 3x70 one of best zoom I have that I used on SLR ).

Maybe the Zuiko 75-150 very cheap small light zoom can be a good choice for M if distortions accepted.

Anyway, I use mainly fix focal length lenses in M mount or 3d parties these days, zoom was for fun and not as practical as it seems.

I've had good experience with K&F adapters, not very expensive and all the ones delivered to me have been well made with no light leaks and perfectly parallel lens mounts.

Many different mounts available and they even do 8 and 10 mm M-extension tubes.

Thank you, I’ll check to see if they’re available in the UK

Re. Olympus I have not used zoom lenses, only old zooms I use on digital (but infrequently) is a Tamron Adaptel 80-210 which is OK and a Tokina 35-70/2.8 in Olympus OM mount which is pretty good for a zoom.

But from Olympus I really like their primes, small, leight weight, sharp and a very pleasing rendering/bokeh. From the longer ones I have the 85/2 which is stellar, the 100/2.8 which is very good, the 135/2.8 which is OK (the older M-Elmar 135/4 beats it hands down) and the 200/4 which is comparable sharpness wise with the Telyt 200/4 but a lot smaller and lighter.

Yes, I moving towards the Zuiko 200mm/f4. I’m watching a couple on eBay, one us BIN for £79, the other is on auction currently less than that and I can get an adapter for around £35. Any thoughts/experience with with Elmarit-R 180mm f4; slightly shorter and probably heavier than the OM? Thanks for your feedback.

Zuiko OM 200mm f4 images show CA . You'll likely find using any tele lens on an M with the monitor's LV is awkward unless a tripod is used . Better to use the Leica EVFs. If you acquired a Leica EVF you might consider using a Leica R 135/2.8 via an R to M adapter … add an R 2x extender to the 135/2.8 = 270mm f5.6 . An older 135/2.8R twin cam can be purchased for £$reasonable … it's a good lens but best used at f4 - f8 … and the R 2x extender can be purchased for £$reasonable too. Do you have a copy of Leica Pocket Book 8th Edition which shows performance / MTF data for all Leica R lenses? If you were to purchase a Leica EVF the Canon FD 300/4 L lens could be worth considering with an FD to M adapter … the FD 300/4L lens has a built-in tripod mount … FD 300/4L is very usable at full aperture … it's heavy but on a tripod weight is not a problem.

Another long focus lens worth considering if you're prepared to use an EVF is the Novoflex 400mm f5.6 Noflexar T which is modular and can be used with a Novoflex LEMA adapter to bayonet straight onto any digital M camera https://www.novoflex.de/en/products-637/lens-adapters/adapter-rings/adapter-rings-products/adapter-rings-for-follow-focus-lenses/adapter-for-leica-m-mount-camera-to-novoflex-universal-bayonet-a.html … the 400mm Noflexar T is a highly corrected 3 element 'telescope' lens (as distinct from telephoto) and is  capable of superb results .Possible to find a 400mm Noflexar T complete with shoulder stock on Ebay for less than £100. I use my 400mm Noflexar T with a tripod on with my Leica SL 601.

So I acquired a OM Zuiko 200m f4 and 2x converts for a reasonable price (£90), and tried it out for the first time.  You certainly need a steady hand or preferably a tripod.  The images of the bird box were taken resting on a wooden shelf in a hide, the Cormorant on a tripod.  More practice required, but quite pleased.

As lower-cost alternative to Leica's electronic "Visoflex" EVF I recommend a display loupe. These are made for DSLR's in video mode. Cheap from China or expensive from Hoodman.

On a tripod the extra bulk does not matter. The loupe is in line with the lens. This is convenient when rotating the lens-camera-combo between landscape and portrait. The loupe will work on future bodies with similar display size.

Hi Peter is this what you mean?  They seem to vary significantly in price
