I just use Fotos for reviewing photos if I’m out and about, over a beer and sometimes posting to social media.  I rarely change the settings at all.  If this persists, take the camera in to your dealer, show then what’s happening and if they can’t get it to work insist on a replacement.

As far as i remember, i dont actually input the passwords, let me try to recall;

1. turn on m10-D with the wifi mode, the light blinking, wait till it’s steady bout 20-30 seconds

2. open the leica apps, i didnt go to wifi setting though, follow the instructions on leica fotos, which was connecting to camera,  shooting the barcode, then connects automatically...

hope you solve your problem

Remember, I know tech. What I do know is that either the password set in the hardware does not match what's on the label or the hardware is broken and will not accept the correct password. Either way, it's a defective camera. The original seller was kind enough to offer to take it back.

I've also never input a password to my M10-D when using Fotos with it, and i have survived several updates to both Fotos and M10-D firmware.  So have you stepped back a bit and asked whether the SSID that the camera broadcasts has the correct serial number?  You can see that by just asking any phone what networks are available for Wifi to connect to.

I am not saying that the Fotos app is asking me for a password. The QR code scanned by Fotos includes the password (I verified this by using a generic QR reader that reveals what data is encoded in a QR code). If one tries to connect to the wifi outside of Fotos, your phone or your computer will ask for the password in order to join. The password given in the QR code will not work.

The SSID broadcast by the camera has the correct serial number embedded in its name.

I don’t understand this. When connecting Fotos to the SL or TL-2, the camera asks if I want it to create a network or join an existing network. I’ve tried joining my home network, but never had any success with it.  But, if I get the camera to set up a network, wait for the light to stop flashing (on the bottom of the camera), then run the Fotos App.

With the M10-D, I just turn the dial on the back to wifi, and wait.  Then I open Fotos and I get the list of cameras I own, and click on the M10-D. I’m then asked if I wish to join, and I say yes.  There’s no more to it.

No password loaded, or QR code required, and I don’t go to settings on my phone to join the camera’s wifi from there.

I don’t understand what “wifi outside of Fotos” means.

Is the password generated by a Leica that correctly interacts with Fotos for automatic sign-in also the serial number, or some hash of the sno?  (In which just listing it won't help to tell what has gone wrong.)

Is a separate 8 digit number. I do not know if it is somehow related to the serial number, but I very much doubt it is because the public SSID has the serial number as part of its name.

The 802.11 protocol (a/b/g/n) uses a secure protocol called WPA2. There are a number of techniques that can be used to crack WPA2, but they first require packet capture from an established connection. Since one needs the password to be able to establish a connection, those techniques do not work.

I've returned the camera to the vendor.

To @IkarusJohn, you are talking about the user interface and I am speaking about the technology that is used by Leica underneath to support that interface. (Understand that I am a technical person. Google my name to find out what I do for a day job.)

You are 100% correct. The password and QR codes are alternative ways of doing the same thing, but there is no way to bypass the shared secret (also called password or PSK), except brute force, as you mentioned in your original post.  Your camera was somehow configured incorrectly or the WiFi was malfunctioning in some other way (more unlikely). I don't use Fotos anymore, because it stopped working on my Samsung tablet after the update last autumn, but I don't recall that there would have been a possibility to change the WiFi password in the app, which otherwise could have explained, but not necessarily solved, your problem.
