New Leica M mount camera with EVF is rumored to be in the works (already rumored before here😞 24MP sensor, body similar to the M240. The camera will have a native M mount and will be offered as an alternative to the M10 (the pictures above are just a concept sent in by a reader).

Has there been any discussion about this?

The general concept - pages and pages and pages. See M10 forum.

This particular rumor may or may not have been discussed yet.

Putting M10 electronics into an M240 body would make some sense - more room for a large, high-quality EVF module.

But IMHO rumors about an M EVF amount to Leica being diplomatic - in the sense of "Diplomacy is the art of saying "Nice Doggie," whilst looking around for a rock to throw."

But I think that the "mocked-up" pictures are precisely that – "mocked-up" and because that, I don't think one should even be discussing the making of decisions based upon those.

The real discussion should be about the whole idea of an EVF M and whether there might be one in the pipeline somewhere.

I think that the unique experience of looking into the rangefinder camera’s viewfinder window combined with the compact size is the essence of a Leica M. And nothing beats this. Improving the viewfinder with modern technology without compromising this user experience will be the biggest challenge as I see it.

Maybe they can succeed if they manage to create a kind of electronic rangefinder, with the best of both old and new. A good, but "regular" EVF might work in an additional version, but it will not be a worthy successor to a "real" M.

Yes I hope there is one produced for those who would like it but, as I said, it's not for me.

No EVF on a M thank you........As many have pointed out before in various threads and posts if the camera didn't have an optical viewfinder with the split image rangefinder then it wouldn't be a M, end of story. The camera mentioned here in the posting is to me nothing more than an interchangeable lens Q, not bad for some users for sure and maybe there's a market there that Leica has looked at, but the camera as such, faked or not, isn't a M.

BUT, what I personally would like to see in further iterations of the existing OVF is perhaps the choice of seeing more information at the base of the OVF and please in something a bit better than the existing font that looks like it was transplanted from an original Casio digital watch from the 60's. Surely that isn't an impossibility? I know it's a very different system but to be able to see even half of what's shown at the base of my Nikon 810's finder would be very handy at times.....plus of course the ability to turn it all off for when one wants a clean VF.

The EVF predictions don't sway me either.  I have not found an EVF that I would prefer to the M's OVF, although I have not yet held an SL2 in my hands and the Q2 did not impress (live in Colorado far from a Leica store!).  Maybe its just my (20/20 lasik-improved) eyes, but the only one I have found satisfactory is on the Sony RX-10 II.  There is something about its construction that I haven't been able to define from the product literature, and I'm told was dis-continued on the later models of the RX-10.  In the future I may need the focus confirmation of an EVF, but for now there is nothing that beats the clarity of the M's OVF.

I have posted this in another thread (bolding is mine).

Leica Rumors 2019/01/08:

However, Stefan Daniel added to this, emphasizing there will always be a rangefinder version. However, they are looking at opportunities to have a second model with a built in EVF. They will never swap the rangefinder to EVF, but a second version alongside the rangefinder is very possible in the future.

Put one in your pocket and you will soon realise the difference

771g vs 660g (from Leica's specs SL and M10). Not that much heavier really. 139 x 80 x 38.5mm vs 147 x 104 x39mm (from Leica's specs SL and M10). Yes bigger but not that much. And largely down to the EVF .....

The EVF would be inside the mirrorless M of course. David vs Goliath sort of ;).

Add a handgrip and Frankenfinder .....😉

A Frankenfinder with an EVF? Why not a Visoflex III? :D
