Following Ivy Mining Bee images were all taken with Panasonic S1R / Novoflex Leica R to L/TL  'dumb' adapter / Leica R 2x APO extender / Leica R 100/2.8 APO Macro ... set aperture f8 or f11 (thus effective f16 / f22) ... ISO 1600 /3200 on a dull / hazy Sun afternoon. I'd forgotten the S1R was 're-set' to factory settings yesterday so all images inadvertently taken as jpegs instead of RAW.  Camera/  lens combination was supported on a Berlebach mini wooden tripod fitted with Novoflex fork mount.  The 'hit rate' (i.e., 'in focus' rate) was fairly good considering a manual focus lens was used.

Ivy Mining Bee on limestone cliff slope nesting habitat

I've studied the Ivy Mining Bees colony at Swaddywell Nature Reserve between  Peterborough and Stamford UK over the last few weeks and photographed specimens using a Nikon 1 J5 / Nikon 1 70-300mm plus extension tubes ... it's a very lightweight outfit and well suited to insect photography. Yesterday i used the Leica R 100/2.8 APO Macro for the first time with the Panasonic S1R.  In September, before the recent rains, the bees were very active i.e. burrowing / mining their individual nest holes both in the ground and in sloping cliffs . They are solitary bees but nest in colonies. Yesterday afternoon the bees seemed to be very scarce but they may have been in their nests. I'm hoping that recent heavy rains have not destroyed the nests ... need to visit earlier in the day to ascertain if the bees are more active in the mornings.

Ivy Mining Bees are a relatively new species to the UK ... first discovered in Dorset in 2001 ... following discovery in Southern Europe in 1986. The bees mainly feed on Ivy flowers and gather Ivy nectar and pollen as food for their developing bee larvae. Ivy is a late flowering plant (September / October) and the Ivy Mining Bee is the last active mining bee species of the year in the UK. There are well over 100 other mining bees species in the UK.  2020 is the first year the bees have been observed at Swaddywell; I've submitted photos to BWARS https://www.bwars.com/home for official identification ... but they must be Ivy Mining Bees (Colletes hederae) as no other mining bees are active at this time of year.

... when female mining bees use cliff cavities / crevices as nest holes instead of digging /mining holes in the ground, the insects are called 'renters'. In this colony there are many more ground nesting bees than there are 'rent a nest' specimens .

Berlebach Mini Wooden Tripod with levelling head fitted with Novoflex fork mount ... a very useful camera /lens support for ground level work. Hard foam cushion is recycled packaging material ... also used as knee pad. I was reluctant to use the Leica R 100mm APO Macro plus 2x APO extender because the bees are continually moving ... making accurate manual macro focus difficult ... but with practice manual focusing was achieved fairly consistently.  I find the fork mount is much better than using a ball head or pan and tilt head when photographing insects.

Superb image

How do you like 24-105?
Seems like an interesting compromise of weight / range / macro / OIS vs the other 24-X lenses from Penny/Sigma/Leica

Thanks.

The 24-105 adapts to many different areas without problems, I can only speak well of it.

Even if it doesn't excel in anything, it satisfies my qualitative needs; focal range and close-up capability make it a perfect photographic companion.

How do you use the fork head?  Is it like a beanbag, that you just rest the lens in?
