S1R + Panasonic 70-300 @180mm

Impressive landscape! May I ask how satisfied you are with the 100-300? I am considering to buy a zoom in addition to the 20-60 and the 85/1.8 and tried the 70-200/4.0 and the 70-200/2.8 briefly. The latter is a bit to bulky and heavy to carry around and the 100-300 seems to get better reviews than the 70-200...

This one was done with the 70-200/4.0 (@166mm)

From my brief handling of this lens during the workshop I can say that it is a very well designed product with a much nicer haptic and weight than the standard Lumix-S lenses. You feel quality from beginning. From the image quality I would also have problems in justifying the purchase, as my impressions with the different lenses didn’t show any real flaws in this regard. The photographer who led this little workshop praised the quality of this „nifty fifty“ and compared it with the glass from Leica. I can’t judge this statement as all my Leica lenses are at least as old as I am 😎

I think I would have bought it as an 50 1.2. Not that there is anything to complain about, afaik it's a more or less perfect lens with no real flaws (beside it's size/weight).

For now I'm fine with my 50 1.8 but would love to own a 50 1.2 that joins my 35 1.2 and 135 1.8 :)

I'm sure you meant 70-300. I bought it without comparing to the 70-200 options because of the size difference. The size advantage gives me the option to store more snacks (power bars / gels) in my hiking backback. Thought it might be a bit of a compromise but I could not find one so far. This lens is so sharp and it's just fun to dive into distant landscape details that show in the 48 MP files. I own the Panasonic 16-35, 20-60, 24-105, the 70-300 and 1.8 primes and consider the 70-300 the best lens. My usecase is landscape that means infinite focus and f8 or f11 most of the time. The closest thing to a portrait might be this where I got a visit during the lunch break. The guy was less than 10m away. Double IS is great, you can handhold ridiculous times.

Thought we may have seen some more from the Pan S5II here by now, with PDAF coming to L mount, hinting at what Leica may bring next.  Wonderful images from @Sparkassenkundewith the very beautiful models and lighting, but thought others may want to know about Tracking and AFC now.  I've had the S52 about a week now, knew I would have to try one and the trade in offer was hard to resist.   Biggest surprise (and joy) is the ability to use tracking with MC-21 and EF lenses, when using the EF 135 F/2 and tracking the dogs at play I have had almost the same hit rate (very good) as with the Pan 70-300.  Just had jpegs so far, Silkypix too clunky for my liking, I'll wait for Adobe.

Charlie, flat out with the 70-300 - I am always the ball thrower as well as the photographer so the camera has to grab focus quite quickly for me to get anything, it does so successfully probably 70-80% of the time with long bursts of images keeping good focus. Click if you want to check sharpness here.

Coming towards me, focus followed well, and this was with MC-21 and EF 135 at F/2

Again with the 135 - it kept them in focus well during their tug of war - out of about eight images it drifted to the tree beyond once or twice.

I am by no means feeling L mount now has a sports and action hero in the S5I1, don't think they are aiming at that market, but I can see why the excitement from Lumix and L mount users, especially videographers and bloggers, it's a big step forward, given the price point and features I think Panasonic have done great!

I couldn't resist the Panasonic closeout deal on the S5 with the free 85mm f/1.8.   This is with my new S5 and the 50mm Summilux-R ver. 1 (1970) wide open @ ISO 100, 1/100 sec
