This was early in the morning at the Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, California, which hasn't been used by the Navy for a long time. The aspect of the photo I like is that the sky was dark, but the early morning sun lit up the jet, separating it with lighter tones from the background and making it stand out as the focal point of the image. 75mm Summicron, orange filter.

I'm now an instant Monochrom believer.

I have been acquiring a little bit too much equipment recently, and I had to explain to my wife why getting the M10M at a discount through Leica for my corrupted-sensor M9 was a good deal.

So I just brought it out during lunch today and snapped a few shots, explaining to her the reason for the orange filter. Her comments when seeing the photos:

"Its so sharp" (to which I responded, yes, without being harsh.)

"The gradations are so smooth." (I explained how the sensor sees more shades of gray than a conventional sensor)

"You don't miss the color." (My favorite.)

I'm definitely looking forward to using this camera.

M10 Monochrom; M APO-Summicron 50mm at 5.6; 1/60 second; orange filter; contrast slightly boosted in LR.

I am always looking for compositions like this nowadays. I call it the 'Alan Schaller Syndrome'. Preferably the figure should be all in black, silhouetted, and wearing a hat, highlights blown out, and shadows deep. Mark Fearnley is another one in that mould. This photo is only partially successful on all those counts. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

M10M + 50mm Summilux-M ASPH

Yes, but for the full Alan Schaller, you need a 24 Summillux

This "tax oak" was planted between 1700-1750 . The story goes that, if farmers planted trees in their meadow they would have to pay less taxes. This beautiful tree was preserved and can be admired at the s'-Graveland estate in the Netherlands.

M10M 35mm Lux(FLE), with yellow filter.

Dark Hollow Falls, Shenandoah National Park. Slow shutter, ND Filter, Noctilux 50 mm, 160 ISO. It's a strenuous trek but worth the serenity at the Falls.

Well done -- good separation thanks for the explanation about the sun just hitting the Jet and still off the buildings in the background. The orange filter created drama in the sky and strong contrast. -- CHIPS

Very serene just enough contrast in the sky with the yellow filter. Is that the "farmhouse" on the left in the treeline? It looks like a manor house on an estate.

Yes your technique is very well done -- the tonal range is gentle and shows the grays to good advantage --this photo composition has power and grace at the same time. CHIPS

Dark Hollow Falls sounds like something from Grimm's Fairy Tales -- It is a trek to get there but the beauty and sounds are worth the effort. M10M, yellow filter, 50 mm Noctilux, ISO 160 shutter 2 seconds.
